Jon---2003 MINI Cooper
« on: March 09, 2003, 03:31:28 PM »
July of 2003, what an impulse buy....walked in for a test drive, just to play, walked out 3 hours later with what has turned out to be the most fun with a car I have ever had.  A true automotive love affair.

Here is how it looked when I got her home, after adding the 17" wheels of course ;)...took the 15" rims off ASAP.

when I hit 8000 miles :)...but showing the OEM speedo which I change later...

I immediatly got involved with the MINI community, although, as it turns out, they are not as fun or as into cars as this group here, so over time, I have become non-involved with the MINI folks.  But when I first hung out with them we went on some fun drives...

Then the mods began:

Hood stripes...

custom roof graphic...

engine modifications and performance upgrades like coilovers, cadmium drilled and slotted rotors with Ferodo DS2500 pads, sway bars, strut tower bars front and rear, prototype Milltek exhaust for the Cooper....and enough custom shiny bits to make your eyes hurt :)

Then there was track time...

New xenon headlamps...

Then all new custom interior, blue gauges, blue sport seats, harnesses, 2 tone doors, custom black ostrich leather, and chrome trim.

All I can think of is the scene in Liar Liar where Jim Carrey is "the pen is b-b-blue"  Sadly I couldn't find a screenshot, Maybe I'll make one tonight when I get home.   Looking good Jon.

LOL...I make that joke about my car all the time.  Betsy just looks at me funny and walks away ;)

thanks for the compliments guys.  Hopefully in the next 4-6 weeks I will have the interior done, need to find some adhesive glue to get the leather to stick to the door cards and dash, and then start sewing the leather panels together.  Then I might debate putting either blue or tan over stitching in them.  Who knows.

bump for getting the rear interior done.  Color is not quite what I wanted, I was hoping there would be a better blend between the seats and the tan of the rear door card, but I can live with it.  I think it will look better once I get the front door cards done, which will be similar, along with my blue and tan coco-mats.

first I put in a bunch of Dynamat, hopefully all the hours and hours spend installing the stuff will pay off making the car more solid and quiet.  I don't care about the weight, total gain of 45lbs....but This is not a race car, so it was not an issue.

here is a before and after of the dynamat install

and the rear with the side panels and seats re-installed.

Aha! Now I understand what you meant by the mini looking like the mk2 interior-wise.

That chrome piping looks the friggin BIZ! Is that OEM stuff?

That's the same stuff I bought for the Passat and called it the "W8" trim! Cheap as hell, worked wonders and looked fantastic! :D

Steering wheel update...BLACK OSTRICH LEATHER in the HIZZ-OUSE!!!!! 8O

step 1--put ends together

step 2--drill holes so it is easier to stitch together, but mark them first so they are even

step 3--stretch that biatch over the wheel

step 4-- start stitching...and a close up

step 5--test fit the multi function buttons in one side because you are too tired to finish the rest of the wheel

edit:  Steering wheel done, FINALLY!!!  Total time was about 6 hours of measuring, cutting, prepwork, and stitching...then re-assembly of the multifunctions.  Tomorrow it goes back on the car and the rest of the Dynamat gets installed on the front doors.

not yet, I am in the process of making them, also covering the door cards, and the upper dash cover.  Fitting the curves has lended itself much more difficult than I anticipated....started on the dash cover Thursday, got frustrated....so I will leave it until sometime next week and give it another go.

Finished the interior this morning...and just washed and waxed the car, all clean and ready to go....and put on my new car cover...it is really dusty around here, so keeping it cleaner while it sits in the garage will help prevent swirl marks :)

Jon - that looks awesome, even if the eyes are somewhat freeky.  does changing the size of that intake filter change your performance at all?

I love the eye balls, they are really detailed when you see them up close.  I think it makes the car mean, that way, people will stop calling it cute, haha.

the change in the filter had no change in performance, my car is still slow, LOL.

I needed a replacement, and they no longre make the long nect ones, so I went with the one that is on there now, only about an inch shorter, but I beleive the same amount of air gets sucked in...I have the ram air tube from the front of the car pointing right at the air filter, so it sucks in cold air....

new set of coilovers...Megan Racing, adjustable dampening, independent height from spring pre-load, and built in camber plates.  Installed them yesterday, here is a bad pic from today showing the new improved ride height.  I need to put my spacers back on the front, that will look much better.
