BUMMER...
« on: May 26, 2004, 06:10:51 PM »
When I went to pick up my plugs and pads I met a really unfortunate B5 owner.

I head him talking about all the engine work that needed to be done to his 98 B5…Heads, pistons, rods, lifters, and gaskets.  I thought to my self, sounds like his TB broke.  So on his way out, I asked him…  Yep sure enough, it broke on him and now he gets to pay to have his baby put back together.  BUMMER!!!

We talked for a minute and he was aware of the ClubB5.  He has done some mod work to his car, shocks, springs and APR chip.  He has a K04 sitting in his garage that he is going to have installed when they rebuild his engine.  I told him about the TB GTG and let him know that there is local club that might be worth checking out.  I gave him a card, so hope fully he will join us.

Jim, if you are reading this, welcome and I hope it all works out for you.

That is a big bummer... do you know how many miles he had? I was wondering when TBs typically 'go'. I know you're supposed to change them at 60..
I will need to do mine probably early next year. Woohoo!

I think he had about 60K on the car.

He had the old tensioner, as do all pre 2001 models, so that was the main cause of the failure.

Thankfully you and I have the new one, but I am still going to do mine at about 65-70K.  At the rate I am going that will be next March or April.

That tensioner is supposed to be replaced at the 40K service on MY 2000 Passats.

Yes that is true.  I noticed on the 40K service has changed for the B5.5 and no longer calls for the replacement of the tensioner :?

Hopefully that means the one Amanda and I have is going to hold up.

As for the TB GTG, just let em know when and I an there!!

I just saw the afore mentioned car...

The engine is toast.  It can not be rebuilt and the unfortunate owner now gets to buy a new one.

Maybe time for a swap, I think a 2.7 Twin Turbo will fit 8)
