Me too.  I hope it is that sporty.  VW can do with a nice affordable car right now.

Nice affordable car?
The Golf/Jetta/NB are the only offerings from VW, though the upcoming Golf/Jetta V will gain a lot of weight due to all the new features it will get.
Don't think they are getting cheaper either.

The huge chrome grille is growing on me, just like the huge black grille on the new Audis.  It would be nice if it's satin aluminum (like the S4 trimmings), but it will probably chromed plastic due to costs, unfortunately.  The plasticized chrome would not age well from all the rock chips and wear and tear the front end gets (not to mention keeping it clean and bug free!).

So will this be a 2005.5 model since it's a 2006 model released early in 2005?
I hate these mid-year changes.

Well I'm referring more to the people that can't afford the Touareg, and Phaeton wanting a new body style that hasn't been out since 98.

Personally, I like the new design direction VW is going in and that picture is (if it makes it to market like that) is really starting to grow on me.  Of course the first thing I may do is paint the grill, but hey, that's how it goes.

I like the beefier engine options too.

Yeah baby! 2.0T with stock ~200hp! Wondering how heavy this bad boy is. Even with the new engine options, why does it seem VW always lags behind powerwise? I'm thinking of the Nissan Maxima/Altima, Accord, new Subaru Legacy, etc.

VW is going the same grille direction as Audi, I am having a tough time liking it.  I can;t stand the new face of the C6 A6, and that Passat face is hard for me as well.

If you're going to go with that style of car, even though VW's is new...manufacturers styles all seem to look similar.
The acura TL looks just as cool and boasts 270. That's unmodded. I like the new dub, but I'll bet good money I can get a more powerful car for the same price they're going to ask for that one.

It's about time they redesign the Passat as the styling of the current model has been around since 1997.  It's hard to keep the same clean German Bauhaus look when there are so many other cars out there with newer and flashier styling, so I'm guess VW took a more stylistic approah to stay competitive and desirable.

I like the new styling and I'm sure it will be feature-packed and will still have that quality Audi-like interior, but there are so many other great cars out there (Acura TSX & TL, Mazda 6, Volvo S40, Infiniti G35, Saab 9-3, etc.) that offers great styling and performance for around the same price and I won't be treated like a second class citizen when I take my car in for service -- so it will be interesting to see how well the new Passat will sell.

My sentiments exactly.  Except that I have no money for a new car and even if I did I'm keeping my beautiful sleeping Elegant Green '98...

I guess I will but in here and say something about this as well.

From what I have read from Jamie (admin/owner) or VWVortex, he has said that the front grille surround will be of a satin aluminum finish (brushed aluminum Im guessing) which will be VW's new trademark.  Notice how alot of the Golf's have had stock aluminum trim?  The new Golf V has the aluminum trim in certain areas.

The new car has lots of potential, and I think with the proper launch from VWoA here in the US, and the proper advertising, it can be another great selling US car.

As far as performance... the US spec VR6 engine in the new Passat is going to be a pretty powerful unit from what I've read.  Upwards of 250+, depending on final production.  Thats more then the R32.  There has also been talk about a 275 hp VR as well, all depending, yet again.  The 2.0T 16v engine is going to be nice.  I would guess, atleast a power gain of say... 40-60HP with a nice chip, which would put it into the range of the VR engines.

Stock output on the VW engines is always lower then its competitors, but what you have to keep in mind is that VW builds these engines for low end torque.  You wont find too other Toyota, Nissan, Honda engines that have so much torque below 2000rpms.

HTH,
Steve
