Another FMIC installed!!!!!!
« on: June 07, 2004, 02:15:19 AM »
No, it's not me again. This time it was Pat's car that got the new heat sink!  :)

Here's the only picture we took of it. All bolted on and secured, finally...

It took us a bit longer than I had originally anticipated. Part of it was do to the IC mounting brackets not being as straight as possible. And part of the delay was us not really understanding what EVO wanted us to do to mount this bad boy.

It's a freaking huge IC and looks very well made. Pat bought this off of a friend's wrecked A4 race car so it had some issues that we knew about going in. Pat had the IC repaired and tested for leaks. He said the unit was absolutely sealed with no leaks at all!  8O  There were some minor twists in the outer fins and tubes, but over all the IC is a solid unit and will serve Pat well!  :D

What I learned today (because I always learn something new on these deals) was that the B5 Passat has way more room up front for a FMIC than an A4  does. Holy cow is that bad boy tight in there. In my car I have scads more room to the front and back of the IC. And my FMIC is only 1" shorted than the Evo unit pat has. Mine, over all, is about 1.5" longer as well.

I will say that the Evo pipes that are designed for this IC are wonderfully made and work very well.

Like I said before, Pat's car will be one happy ride from now on.

That is, once he fixes his clutch issues...

Thanks again for all the help, Chas.  I'm really looking forward to testing this car out when it gets a new clutch.

Pat, I would highly suggest a Spec flywheel and clutch.  Stage 2 clutch will handle anything a stage 3 turbo will pit out, and it is much better then the stage 1 kit that they produce.  www.specclutch.com or www.newdimensions.com for the clutch units.

Steve

BTW, thats a really nice looking cooler.  Ive thought about either going with an ABD unit, or an Evo... and Im leaning more towards the Evo.

Hey Steve,
Thanks for the input.  If you have time can you give me a call?  I'm looking to talk with people that have first-hand experience.
Thanks!

I havent installed mine yet, but the quality of the parts look great so far.  I bought the unit used, so the pressure plate and flywheel need resurfaced.  Also, the clutch disc was dropped when removing the parts, so that needs replaced as well.  Once its installed I will let you know how it rides.

Mike,
How's $100 with hoses sound?  The passenger side hose that connects to the DV is about eight months old.

Nice Pat!  I can't wait to see it with the bumper back on.  I bet that will really help at the track tomorrow.

Dude, I didn't tell you?  My clutch is shot.  A few days ago I was putting along on 470 in fifth gear, floored it, and the revs just shot up to 5K without the car accellerating.   8O
So, there's one more thing for me to work on.  I'll likely order a new clutch today or tomorrow.  I guess after 126K miles I can't complain.

I can hear it now...

The devil went down to Second Creek
It's a track out in the weeds.
Pat pulled up in the Audi A4
Just to give it what it needs.

Now the devil took one look
At that A4 and said with a grin
I'll be my Honda will take you on
Boy there's no way you can win.

What's scary is that Winston must know the words to the original song to mock it so well.  :P    :nervous:  :lookround:

OK Pat get that clutch in time for track day in ABQ again on July 18th!!!  Let's see if you still have only 5 psi boost.
Considering how down you were on power, your track times were incredible!

Well, the clutch officially died a couple hours ago.  I was planning on going up to Steamboat to hang with a friend this weekend, but instead I'm just going to limp over to the mechanic with my bike on top, leave the car there until the clutch arrives, and ride my bike back home.  ***sigh***

Well Pat, you knew the end was near and that it was only a matter of time. It's a good thing it didn't strand you anywhere. Good luck with the install and I hope you get it back soon.

Doh!  Darrell told me you weren't going to make it.  That sure stinks man, but on the good side, you get a lot more exercise.

I think I need my clutch to fail.  Maybe I'll just ride in to work and quit being a slacker.
