MTM Apollo: a general-purpose supercar

MTM (Motoren Technik Mayer), German company specialized in the preparation of vehicles of the Group Volkswagen (Audi, Volkswagen, Seat, Skoda and Lamborghini), but also of Porsche mark, was created by a former engineer motor mechanic of AUDI AG, Roland Mayer.

This company forged a solid reputation in the automobile medium and in particular in Germany. The innovations and the vehicles prepared by MTM made run ink, as with the famous TT bimoto and A8 k500, equipped with a compressor carrying the power with 503 CH, on the basis of engine V8 4.2 40V.

For more than 2 years, Roland Mayer had prepared in secrecy a new supercar, combining many qualities, untraceable among the sporting manufacturers such as Ferrari or Porsche.

The idea:

The idea is to propose a general-purpose car, adapted as well to the road with the track. For that of many studies and models were made in order to lead to the Apollo concept.
The project értait in the beginning baptized R1 and its originator was the designer Marco Vanetta. This project was a vision which gently became real. The goal was to propose a multi-purpose vehicle (road-circuit), with interchangeable body as for the racing racing cars, offering a maximum of safety for the occupants and having a tubular frame on which the body cut out in 3 parts would come to be fixed.


Moreover its price must be gravitational, in order to compete with the large sporting makes of car like Ferrari or Porsche, but by repairing the gaps of these last: excessive weight, exhorbitant price, fasitidieux maintenance and repairs, preparations for the track, miss sportivity.

Idea with the product:

The schedule of conditions of this vehicle is very tight and it forces 10 objectives to be reached:

A total weight lower than 1.000 kg
A very low centre of gravity
A perfect distribution of the weight, with before and with the back: 50% - 50 %
One CX weak: W = 0.39
A V8 motorization apoortant a consequent power
A concentrate of technologies, resulting from the race
A chrome tubular frame very resistant
A certification TUV for the homologation of the car for the road and a certification for the track
The use of materials of series for its construction, in order to reduce the costs, combined with the technologies used in race
A price defying any concurence

That gave rise to the Apollo concept which joins together its 10 points.

Cell of survival out of carbon:

As in Porsche WP Will square, the cell of survival is entirely made out of carbon in order to have a significant resistance to the shocks and to preserve the life with the occupants of the vehicle.

The cockpit is equipped with 2 bucket seats out of leather, wrapping perfectly the occupants and now strapped using belts 4 points. It is possible to have a bucket seat for child of low age in the center of the cockpit, located between the 2 seats. This last is folding in its arrangement.
The pedals are adjustable with the morphology of the driver. All information is indicated on the wheel, as on certain racing racing cars. Moreover reports/ratios occur via pallettes, located behind the wheel, as in F1. With the choice, Apolo can be equipped with an air-conditioning, weighing down the vehicle slightly.
Each door consists of 2 panes, making the cockpit very luminous, in particular when the roof is removed (Roadster). The cockpit is equipped with carbon, thus reducing the weight of the car and bringing a sense of security.


Various possible motorizations:

According to choice's of the customer, Apollo can be motorized différament, of basic V8 developing 360 CH in V8 Biturbo of 650 CH. The engine 4,2 L V8 of origin audi is used as a basis. Later, it is envisaged to choose more powerful engines, of the 10 and 12 cylinders.

As in the mode of the sporting car, the Apollo concept is built around a chrome tubular frame very solid, representing the framework of the car. This frame answers the various safety requirements, like the crashs side and frontal tests. This frame also answers the sporting regulations. Thus this vehicle can be produced in series, but also to be engaged with official sporting tests.


This one, done out of composite materials, is declined in 3 parts, thus making it possible to change the body of Apollo quickly. Indeed, this vehicle having road but such a sporting vocation, two body is available: one for the track, the other for the road. It is thus very fast to pass from the one to the other, without great knowledge in mechanics. This one is also very light. There are no risks of corrosion. The roof is removable, making it possible to transform Apollo into Roadster.



This car is located at the sides of Ferrari Enzo and Porsche Carrera WP.

Apollo is located thus in the niche of the supercars in a favorable position, being thus the ideal synthesis of the concept of a sports car intended for a control on circuit, while being practical in a daily use on road.

Univ.-teacher. Dr.-Ing. bernd Heissing for the modeling and simulations of the prototype.

These 4 people thus gave rise to Apollo and to a new company which will market it at the end of the year: GMG Sportwagen-Manufaktur Altenburg GMBH .
