2000 Passat Variant tail light question
« on: June 17, 2004, 03:07:22 PM »
Hey guys,

I've got a 2000 Passat Variant, and one of the brake lights went out in Steamboat, so I went to Walmart and bought whatever looked like it would work --- no, Walmart does not stock VW oem lights....

Well, I sort of got it to work but not quite:  the brake switch turns on the upper left and right top red lights, but not the bottom.  When driving with lights on (regular, not daylight), the top lights are on, and the brake switch makes them brighter.  Yes, the center light works fine.

Well, stupid question maybe, but what is it supposed to look like?  When driving with the lights off, do both the top and bottom red lights turn on?  How about when just running daytime lights?

Finally, I noticed spaces for two more lightbulbs than were installed (lower right and left positions).  Is this the way it's supposed to be?

Thanks all.  I know I could go to the stealership and get the real deal, but I'd like to avoid it.

The lights should all be up top.  The lower section is where many of us do the Fog light or extra brake light mods, here is a pic of my old 2000 with the fod light on with my regular lights:
