lube recommendations?
« on: August 03, 2004, 01:52:28 PM »
Hey all....
So my car is creaking again, and I am almost out of warranty. I have made an appointment to take it up to Ed Carrol to have them check out the tie-rod ends since they have historically been an issue on our cars.
The service tech of course said that the noise is probably due to the worn out bushings, that when they dry out etc. they can creak with a nice metal on metal sound.

This IS what my car sounds like, however I would like to try lubing them up to see if the sound goes away, before my appointment, which isn't for a week and a half.

Anyone know what kind of lube/grease they like to pump in the bushings to get them to shut the hell up?

TIA
Amanda

Hey Amanda, I would just get some lithium or silicone grease and check out my Tie Rod End writeup to see where to squirt it.

If it goes away for a short time, then you know what it is!

If not, it could also be the Control Arms, but I bet it is just the TRE's...

white lithium grease (in a spray can) works well.
it's dirt and water resistant -- so it's a good idea to clean and dry the area before spraying it on to get the best coverage.

I was going to say KY, but then saw this was about cars.

Yeah KY is kind of nasty and sticky... fake lube is nasty. Better to make your own, in my opinion.

Thanks Win.. I will try that. I just wanted to do it before the appointment, so that if the bushings were still squeaking, i could tell them that's def.  not the problem and they need to do their damn jobs and inspect my TREs and CAs.

LOL!  That was my initial impression too, but then I realized she needed troubleshooting, so I decided to save the smart ass remarks until later on in the post.
