Where to buy a helmet?
« on: August 31, 2004, 09:56:01 PM »
I need to buy a helmet, as I will be racing SCCA and a bunch of track days next year and hopefully a couple the end of this year too.

So does anyone know where I can buy a nice helmet for an afordable price?

TIA

Greg

these guys are in Arvada and seem to have good prices for good equipment.  you can also order on line from them if you aren't going to get up this way - but it is hard to confirm helmet fit on-line.  I'd buy in person.

if you want a true car helmet rather than a motorcycle one, then I know Autosportwerks carries some.

one more thought to add too.  If you get a motorcycle helmet, make sure it has the right certifications for the racing you want to do.  Most modern motorcycle helmets will be OK for track days, but I'm not sure about SCCA races.  Check the SCCA to see what they require then go from there.

Yeah, i believe you'll need a SNEL rating for helmets used in NASA and SCCA but definately check.

When I've bought new helmets for riding I've found the best way is to keep the helmet on in the store for a little while. Walk around. Look at other stuff, but keep the helmet on for a while. Don't just put it on, shake your head a little and go with it. What feels like "something you can live with" or even perfectly comfortable can get really irritating after a little while. You don't want something like a misfitting helmet to be distracting you while screaming down the highway at 140+ on a bike -or by the same logic... when you're on the track.

I would but I have been out of town all week (posting now from Redwood City, CA).  I get home really late tonight then need to spend some time with the wife and kid tomorrow.

that is a little random - in an "its a small world" kind of way.

My company is actually headquartered out here, so I am in RWC about 1 week every other month.
