My coworker has a 2000 1.8  with this error.  I have a VAG-COM, he has the paper bently.  How many people have fixed this by cleaning the MAF?  Vac Hose replcement?  Does the paper bently have a section on how to trouble shoot these CEL's?  I've read all vwvortex posts and CB5's.  This error code showed up after an oil change (he also had the SAPump replaced a few months prior).  COuld this because by a loose pump output hose?

Well I'm not sure about this particular issue, but I would definitley check all the hoses, make sure they are fitted tight, no cracks or splits.

Look for any leaks around the coolant tank, look for the coolant piping just to the left of the engine above the turbo make sure it isn't leaking.

How long ago was the oil changed?  Hve you checked the oil since this started?

Not all of the above are or could be culprits, but it is always nice to rule things out.

I know coloradob5 had a bunch of iusses with no boost and a CEL, he had to replace his MAF and that solved the problem.  This was even after we did a mass MAF cleaning.

If you have a 1.8t DBW 2000+ Passat you can put your MAF in and see if it gets rid of the codes.

17536 is the code I was getting a while back.  It would show up fairly consistently.  I replaced my diverter valve (DV) and all my vacuum hoses but the code didn't go away for good until I cleaned my MAF.  It hasn't come back in the 4 months since.

Have him check all his vacuum hoses to make sure none are brittle or cracked.  Here's a pic that kinda shows where the 4 hoses are that I found and replaced on my 2000 1.8T.  Of course, this didn't fix my problem, but YMMV.

There are several things you can replace before shelling out $160-250 on a new MAF.

1. Replace the Diverter Valve (Bypass Valve) with the Audi TT Bosch unit.  $30
2. Replace vaccum hoses. $10-20
3. Clean MAF  ~$2 for electronics cleaner
4. Clean or replace air filter - $10-50 (for K&N)
5. Replace MAF $158 from Tim Hayes at Liberty VW or $250 from local dealer

This is a frequent occurrance with K&N filters if you over oil them.  This is what happened to me too...
