Caught without a teck manual!
« on: October 23, 2004, 11:24:20 AM »
Hey all, huge problem.  So I was coming home last night and right before I got home, the little temp light came on and started dinging.  I pull over and I have a river coming out the bottom of my car.  I get it home and put her up on the stands.  My best guess right now, since this was 11 last night is there is a coolant leak around that temp sensor.  Is there anywhere else back here that coolant can leak from?  I had a hard time looking back there, I don't have a tech manual yet, since I have had the car less than a week.  All I know is I have coolant everywhere.
Thanks for any help
Shawn

I know this much, if you got coolant on your timing belt, you need to have it replaced....and the coolant affects the integrity of the belt.  That goes for all Audi/VW motors.

I don't have my Bently with me, JR has it, hopefully he can maybe look at it and help you out.

cheers

Shawn,
I'm heading home for lunch today and I'll pick up the manual and take a look see then either PM you, or you can PM or Email me your phone and I'll give you a shout!

It sounds like it'd be a pretty open wound. Be sure to check all the connections that you can find on your own from the resevoir and radiator. I myself have a small leak somewhere as I get lots of buildup around my oil filter flange. I think I have a loose hose on the bottom of the resevoir...maybe....I need more coolant too  :? This sucks. I may have to send my wife to the dealership.

Cool, I am at work today until 4 PM or so.  The coolant is out the back of the engine by the sensor.  The front of the engine is as dry as a bone.
Thanks for the help,
Shawn

Well I finally figured out where my coolant leak is coming from.  My temp sensor keeps popping out when the thermostat comes on!

sounds like you need a new thermostat. (or did it look like the sensor is broken?)

Anyway, I drove through Upham Ct. this weekend looking for a coolant-less red passat, you must have been in a garage.

I did find a pretty cool looking blue one though.  Yours too?  A neighbors?  what is up with the S4 audi badge on the grille of the blue one though?

No the sensor didn't look broken, at all.  Doesn't work all the time, but didn't look broken.
No one here but me has a Passat.  I live on the Cul de Sac side.  The right side if you are coming in off of Wads.  Never been on the other side, and yeah it is in the Garage.

So I guess I also need to ask, why you think it is the Thermostat?  Curiousity sake.
It is pretty impressive, gets up to temp and POP off she comes like a cork, spews coolant all over the place, luckily for me I wasn't looking directly over it at that time.
Thanks,
Shawn

'cause the thermostat is a spring activated thing that moves to allow coolant flow once the engine is warm.  If it happens when the engine warms up, I'd look to things that move when the engine warms up.  thermostat is number one on that list.  It is hard to say, but I'd guess the thermostat is popping open and bumping part of the sensor.

JR, you still have the bentley?  any drawings of the thermostat that would indicate if this theory is a possibility?

In theory makes sense, but isn't the thermostat on the bottom right front of the block and the sensor on the back and middle of the block?  Or have I been talking about the wrong sensor this whole time?!
I do appreciate all the help though.

I have no idea, sorry.  I replaced the thermostat on my old GT coupe (a 2.2L 5 cyl.)  but never worked on the thermostat for a 1.8T. - so can't guide you to the thermostat or the sensor.  Can't even run out to check as the allroad has the 2.7T.

Anyone else?

The All Road, wish I had that problem.  Or better yet, my buddy just got a brand spanking new Volvo S60 R.  All I can say is WOW.

S60R is sweet!

I think if given the chance I'd stick with an S4, but high on my list of favorites is the V70R.  mmmm.

He had an S60 with just the high pressure turbo and it would put you in the seat.  The R WOW, a blast to drive.  I don't think I have ever sat in softer leather in my life!
