2001 S4 Automatic tranny
« on: November 03, 2004, 05:10:50 PM »
Hey guys, i'm getting ready to buy an 01' S4 here in the next month or so, and had a few questions, mainly regarding the auto tranny.  I would absolutely prefer a 6spd, but as for right now, everything in a 200 mile radius of me is either too high of miles or too high of asking price.

I have found one that looks to be a good deal, its basically everything i want, minus the fact that it is an automatic.  Is the auto tranny going to slow me down a lot? Is it strong? Smooth shifting?

Asking price on it is 26k, and it has ~54k miles.  I've found a grey one that is also auto, with ~44K miles but has grey leather seats (looks nasty IMO)

Do you think i should be patient and wait for something more ideal to pop up?  I honestly wouldn't mind driving an auto, i just don't want it to slow me down a lot compared to a 6spd.

Also, hopefully i will be able to meet and cruise with some of you guys when i get this car bought, assuming i find an ideal candidate ;-).

26K for a 2001 seems a bit high if you ask me...and with that milage as well.

The auto will be slower, about one second zero to 60, not to mention the turbo lag you will experience, even in tiptronic mode.

I say wait until you find what it is you are looking for, so you will be happpy with your selection....don't settle.  It is a big investment, so make sure you make the right choice.

and welcome to the club

cheers
jon

When I was shopping for my A6 I was shopping for Tips until I drove a 6sp.  Then that was all I looked for and found the one I have now.

The twin turbo has a fair about of turbo lag and as Jon mentioned will be over emphasized by the Auto.

I mean c'mon you want my hog of an A6 smoking you 060? I didn't think so. ;)

Well i had no intention of paying any more than 23k for an s4 with 50k ish miles.

I did just find a blue one with an asking price of 25k and 45k miles, so i may go check that out.  We'll see.  I'm thinking i'll just be patient and wait it out.  I just don't want to pass something that could work up and then end up going a year with nothing worth the sh*t becoming available.

I wish I had gotten a 5 speed. I'd say wait it out and keep searching... You'll be happier in the long run, hopefully.

In turn, I am happy with my tiptronic on my allroad, but then again, the 6 speed has it's draw.  For what I use the allroad for, the tip is perfect for me, and I feel it has plenty of power after I chipped it.  The turbo lag bites, but once it get's going, it just keeps on going, and going, and going.

I agree with these guys - if you want a manual, wait for the right car rather than getting an auto.  If you don't you'll regret it.

I ended up with a 6spd allroad because I couldn't find a 6 spd S4 avant when I was looking.  That ended up being a good choice for me.  I would have hated it had I chosen an S4 auto.

I guess I'm assuming you're in Colorado. There's somebody on this board who lives in Longmont who is selling their 2002 S4 sedan, 6-speed, <36k miles, for $26k.

Hrmm, decisions decisions.  Mainly my concern is if i do some serious mods, I.E. K04 turbo's, ECU, etc.  Will the auto tranny be able to support it?

I think i may go with the auto since this is going to be my daily stop and go driver and road trip car.

Edit: I would love to purchase from a person, but i have a van i'm trading in thats worth about 3-4k that will be going with it.  Unless you guys know someone interested in a 96 ford windstar

I have a 2000 S4 Tip.  GIAC X-Chip, Brullen Exhaust, K&N.

The auto could use some upgrades, "Tip-chip", better clutches, cooler, and maybe some valve body modifications. Do that stuff and I think it will hold the big power.

The tip may be slower stock vs stock but with the right mods I think it could be very competitive.  Just going to cost a few more dollars.

Of course for the few extra bucks you also have an auto for the daily grind in traffic and a manual shiffter for play time.

If this were a "pure" sports car I would have said no way to the tip. But it is a "sports sedan" I think the tip makes perfect sense.  I just wish there were more information about how to get this tip to work like an F1 tranny. :D  You don't see those guys pushing clutches

hehe  I don't really want a van   :P   But I do have a 2002 Silver S4 sedan with 6 speed tranny and around 35,600 miles..  I am trying to sell it so that I can get an Avant (if possible).  As stated above, selling it for 26K.  Pictures are under the RMCB5 Members section of the Gallery if you want to check it out.
