EVERYONE PLEASE READ THIS
« on: November 11, 2004, 09:18:01 PM »
In the last week we have seen a major decrease in performance in relation to specific threads in the forums.

It has been found that this is caused by large remote avatars. I know we all love having avatars, but please keep your remote avatars under 10K.

To give you all a better understanding of how it works is if a user has a large (file size) avatar and they respond to a thread it will cause some slowness but you may not notice it.  If they continue to post more responses in that thread the slowness becomes worse.  Exponentially worse.

It has taken me most of the day to track this down an in the process I was able to do some other things to make the site a little quicker.

If you need help creating an avatar that has a small kb size let me know and I can try to help you out.

Please avoid using large kb animated gifs.  They are awesome, but in the end is causing page load times in excess of one minute.  One attempt took 89 seconds!

Please understand I do everything I can to allow you all to have the freedom and cool factor of having whatever non-offensive avatar you choose, but I can only do so much.

If I find an avatar that is a problem I will delete it and send you a PM letting you know.

Thanks for reading this and understanding.

Thanks Jay for finding the problem...

No worries about the avatars....if they don't work, they don't work.  I would rather have better site performance over an avatar.

I hope mine is OK, if not, say the word and it is gone....

cheers

I agree.  no problem.  watching the avatar size is a good trade for better site performance!

I will go ahead and fess up here.  My Samurai JAck Avatar was cool and all but it was 110KB AND it was linked from another site, so all of that internet traffic and loading of the avatar ended up being most of the issue.

Now we know.

So not even I am above the law of TCP/IP and the performance of our host's webserver.

You're an even bigger man than we all previously thought, Dub.  I love you.

Pat, you're not getting my Bud Light.

You can have all the MGD and Coors Light though...
