The W8 is faster than I thought...
« on: November 29, 2004, 05:11:30 PM »
Over the holiday, I drove the W8 up to my grandparents for Thanksgiving.  They live in Topeka, Kansas at an altitude of 632 feet, according to my altimeter.  As soon as I started driving around town, I realized that there was a significant power difference in my car.  Lucky for me, I had my G-Meter with me, and decided to take a few runs.

I found a perfectly flat, uninhabited stretch of road (there are many in that area) and got everything setup.  I had half a tank of fuel, and the car had nothing else in it, except me (162 lbs.)  Because VW is replacing my tranny, I decided that I would be as hard on it as I needed to be, in order to have a few good launches.  After turning off the ESP, I took my first run, dropping the clutch at about 2500 RPM. After significant tire spin, I was off, and it felt great... the result 6.35 seconds to 60 and a 14.30 quarter mile at 95 MPH

I was not satisfied, and ran a few more runs.  The last three were almost exactly the same, 0-60 in 5.70 and a 13.95 quarter mile at 97.8 MPH!  I was blown away, it felt so amazing and I wanted to find some other car like a C5 corvette to have fun with!  So, how accurate is the G-Meter?  Well I ran the unit while doing a couple real quarter miles in New Mexico, and it was within .08 seconds of being dead on, on the negative side.  So, I feel pretty confident that the W8 is a 5.70 - 5.80 second car, depending on conditions.  It was 62 degrees, and the pressure was 30.43 which are pretty close to SAE standards.  Wow, I love my car.  It is too bad that it is such a dog up here in Colorado!

Fun stuff! :)

wow, that is quick.  guess those 2 extra cylinders are good for something.

it is amazing what a difference the altitude makes.  I think I'll stick with the turbo up here.

Yeah, turbos create a significant disproportionate advantage at altitude, dang forced induction :)

Turbos help, but they are still faster at sea level too.

I would kinda like to run next to that W8 just for a comparison and see how I do.  :D

There's not a significant difference in speed between your two cars.  Pretty much a toss up.

His W8 moves very well for a tank :)  My butt dyno tells me it is close to a stock S4, and the numbers he gave above are very close to what a stock S4 does (I believe).... and with a lot more room on the inside!

I thought your cars were about the same on the way to ABQ.  Not so?

Yes, very similar...  Only time I pulled hard on him was when we were playing around and I actually downshifted to the "right" gear (I think it was 4th, when we were doing about 80)...  At the track, I think I only beat him by like 2 tenths of a second in the quarter...  I have an APR chip, but my drag techniques are not exactly stellar...

I would be curious still.

I do run GIAC X-chip, Brullen exhaust, Forge BPVs, K&N Filter and some other stuff that looks cool that might give me style speed.

Oh, the S4 is back to stock for the time being...  ASW took the APR chip out for me, and installed a "stock" T chip for me this AM.  The CEL is gone now, but not sure if the code was cleared or not (I did not ask them to clear it, but when I got it back, the CEL was off).  Might look into GIAC or a Sportec chip after this ECU issue is resolved.

With the GIAC chip, exhaust, and a drop in filter, you should be faster..  I have heard good things about the GIAC software, never driven one though.

Jonathan, good to hear about your chip.  If you need my vag, I would be glad to hook it up for you.

Here is my math on the S4 vs W8

 Audi S4/Passat W8/Difference
HP
250 /270/ 20
Torque
258 /275 /17
Weight
3593 /3850 /257
lbs/HP
14.372 /14.2593 /100.8% HP
lbs/ft lbs
13.92636 /14.0000 /99.5% Torque
 (Lower numbers are better)

So, a stock S4 should be almost exactly the same (at sea level) as a W8 assuming the torque curves are similar, which they are.

Interesting.

That's pretty sweet Jason.  So when are you going to get a supercharger or turbo on that thing?  You know you want to be the first one.

You know I have thought about it... but a 10.5:1 compression ratio is a problem...

Just lower the compression with a new headgasket.  Of course, this would probably be part of a kit for this anyway, the problem is that no one has done it before.  But THAT would be one hell of an engine.

I already have a GPS unit that I use all the time hiking and in the Jeep.

The Nav-Plus is more of a "toy" than anything practicle for me. nav funtions would be cool, TV, DVD etc.
