I thought I'd try a Millenium CV boot. It's selling appeal is that it is a one-piece boot, but the rubbber is stretchable enough to be slipped on over the outside of the joint (using a special installation cone), so to replace outboard CV joints, you don't have to remove the axle from the car, or disassemble the outboard joint.
I tried it the other day. Got the hub assy removed from the upper control arms, got the outboard joint separated from the hub - then immediately put it all back together without changing the boot. Two bad points:
1) There is not enough clearance in the Passat front suspension to mount the boot axle-on-car without risk of it getting torn in the process. And even if you did get it on without tearing it, you'd have a hell of a time getting a good angle to affix the boot clamps.
2) The universal-fit nature of the boot led me to believe that at full-lock steering, it might fold-in on itself and get pinched by the CV joint.
I looked in the Bentley manual for how to dissasemble the OB CB joint. It appears to be easy (compared to my 'rocco). So since I have to take the axle off the car anyway, I'm just going to remove the outer joint and use the factory boot.
The Millenium boot might work great on smaller cars with more clearance in the suspension. Like a Civic, maybe.
