Help choosing mods...
« on: December 25, 2004, 02:21:25 PM »
Hey whats up RMCB5? I just moved into the Denver area and purchased a 2001 VW Passat 1.8t with around 50k miles on it. I am looking into putting some basic mods like chipping it and possible a turbo upgrade. I would also like to make some appearance changes to the exterior of the car such as wheels or a body kit. I have about $1,500 to play with, and was hoping you guys could help me out. Unfortunately I know little about cars and what would be my best options for making my Passat stand out from every other Passat on the road.... any help here is greatly appreciated.

Merry Christmas and welcome! I'd look to spend <$1000 for chip and suspension and then save the rest and then some for wheels/tires when summer rolls around.

Suspention and a chip are the first two on the list in my opinion.

Welcome to the club and hope to see you at a GTG soon!

suspension first - always... unless it comes with a sport package, and i don't think your passat does!

Then wheels and tires, then chip.
Quick! Everyone out of the universe!

Any suggestions for a supsension upgrade? Want to still be able to put some sick wheels on it eventually...
I have a buddy that will be able to hook me up with a neuspeed chip.

That's a good buddy to have around!

For suspension, it really depends on what you are looking for.  If you want slightly stiffer and lower, then I would go with the stock shocks with 1BE springs.  These are the VW sport springs.

If you want to really drop it and have a very stiff ride, you can go with coilovers, but that will set you back about $700-1500 depending on what you get and if you get them new or used.  These offer the ability to adjust the height and other things on some models (dampening and rebound).  These are best for track used cars as the suspension is made more for that than everyday use, but I ran them on my car for a couple of years and even though they were very tight, I loved em.

If you want something in between, there are a lot of options as well.  There's the Neuspeed spring/Bilstein shock combo, which can be bought from Neuspeed.  There is actually a group buy going on in the GB section at www.clubb5.com, but the forums were hit by a hacker and won't be up for a few more days.  This is what I run now.

Another in the middle setup is the Eibach Prosystem, which includes shocks and springs.  This is slightly less aggressive than the Bilstein setup, and still lowers the car a bit and stiffens things up.  AOWHAUS on this site has this setup, so feel free to ask him for his opinions.

There are quite a few combinations with suspension.  I would also consider getting a rear swaybar, which will help a lot during hard corners to reduce understeer.

Ive got H&R coilovers.  Great setup.  Be sure to check wheel and tire clearance before investing.  My tires would rub my coils if I lowered it...  I am working on getting some spacers and lugs.  Hope to fix the problem.  I have ridden in a few other cars that have great spring/shock combos.  34K has a great setup.  Very nice.  There are great places online to research this.  Oh and when I first joined I asked the same questions about coils and springs...  so there is a thread here somewhere that may answer a lot of your questions.  :)  Welcome
