Possibly Selling the Passat...?
« on: January 11, 2005, 03:37:53 PM »
I'd really like to have a more reliable, newer car around.  The Passat is now 7 years old and is really showing its age.  Rattles, clunks, shimmies, etc.  You name it, it has it.  Even though the car has been taken care of emmensly, the engine is really showing its age.  Going through 2 blown heads has really put alot of stress on the car and I dont think I can trust it much longer.  Keeping the car would be great, but I know its not possible.

What would I like to replace it?  A 2001-2001 BMW M Coupe.  You know, those limited production Z3's with a hardtop.  Why?  Because it would be a blast to drive and they are few and far between.  I need something to tide be over until the new Passat arrives, if I go back to VW's.  But the sound and power that can be made from the 3.0L inline six is amazing.  Its a high compression motor, but it still has some brunt on the low end.

So, fo those of you that have moved away from your Passats on to something else, can you list your reasons as to moving on, and what really made you cut the Passat from your wallet?

Thanks,
Steve

Steve, that M Coupe thing is an amazing car. Most don't like them at all and that's why the low production numbers, but I like them too!

There is one here in CO that is owned by a local tuning shop guy and he has his supercharged. The freaking thing is even more of a monster!

Good luck with finding your way. It'll be sad not see your car around anymore, but I understand your reasons. I'm not there yet, but someday I'll have to replace my baby too. But not soon!

I love those M/Z3 coupes -- so much better than the convertibles which looks like Miatas and have poor dynamics/structure, and dismal depreciation.

The coupes reminds me of those old Triumph coupes from the UK -- love the unique  (shooting brake) look of it and you get more storage space than the drop top.
Best of luck!

Thanks Alan.  I really think if would be a complete blast to drive.  I talked to a buddy of mine locally, and he said it would be a great BMW to get.

My buddy, Kiley, has a '95 318 2door original 4cyc 4spd car, but the previous owner swapped it to a full M3 with interior, engine, harness, and other misc body panels.  Kiley has since swapped out the differential to an early M5 rear diff, swapped his Vanos units, swapped a 2.5L head on (higher compression, has more kick up top) and some other go fast stuff.  We dyno'ed our cars on Monday, and he mad about 220hp at the wheels iirc, but Im not sure.  I still dont think the dyno was "calibrated" correctly.

Great handling car, and if I go with the 2000-2002 iirc, I get the 3.0L engine, 315hp, and 6spd transmission with some spetacular high end performance and great suspension.

Now, just to find one in the area.

Those M Roadsters are definitely different, but with more than 300 hp, how can you argue his logic?

I see those every now and again around here as well, Steve.  If you get a line on one, go for it.

Or there are always some good Sciroccos on Autotrader.com that you can buy for cheap and dump a 1.8t in them.  Now that would be fun.

Winston, I disagree...I think the coupe is one of the coolest cars produced. It smokes any Sirocco. I love it. The hardtop version that Steve wants is definately the sexiest.

I know you didn't say the M Roadster was sexier than the Scirocco!

And here I thought you were sane!

People that don't like Sciroccos are considered by many psychiatrists to be clinically insane.  There was a vast amount of research done on this...

That would make sense then. I'm only partially insane as I like Sirocco's but I like the M Coupe Hardtop better.

I had a Scirocco for a lil while in high school, at first I thought that car was pretty cool, but then I drove it for a while   :P   It was a while ago, so I don't know the specifics, but there was no power steering, the sunroof didn't work very well, it didn't have any power at all...  but it looked kinda cool  ;)

My little brother's first car was a Sirocco. I was driving a Fox...in fact, he bought another Sirocco for parts...but that was after he burned the clutch out in my Fox and had to replace it ;)

Steve, this car is just super hot...every time I come back to this thread and see this car, I melt.

Wow, what's to say?  Im really not sure, but from what I've gathered on the Coupe over on BimmerForums, the car is sometimes prone to subframe tears with a few other issues.  Its a rare case, but it can happen.  There is a guy in Ohio that can repair them, but at the cost of about 2000-3000 and you have to drive your car there before he can work on it.

The lower hp motor, from 99-00, its 240 stock with a lower compression.  Most people spend about $6k on a turbo/SC kit and make about 300-350hp with this.  The 315hp motor has a compression of 11.5:1, which would have to be dropped before any SC/Turbo setup could be done.  Either pistons, or some thicker head gaskets.

Once I get the router fixed at home, I will be online a little more to research this further.  It would be a really nice adventure, and something different.

Just to clarify, the M Roadster is the soft-top and M Coupe is the hard-top hatchback as pictured above. My friend Mike has an older M Roadster (240hp) and he's been to a few track days. I haven't driven it, but it rides amazing!

Not sure about the Miata reference in regards to its appearance, but I never would've put "poor dynamics/structure" in the same sentence as this car. Any hard top will benefit structurally over its convertible counterpart so I can imagine they must be incredible!

I guess one would have to drive its competitors for some kind of reference: Porsche Boxster S, Audi TT, Mercedes SLK32 AMG, and maybe the S2000, G35 coupe, and 350Z.

This is correct.  The Z3 M Roadster is the convertible version.  There was both the 4cyc and te 6cyc versions that were offered with the Z3 versions.  When BMW introduced the M Coupe, it was more of a "hatch" design, and iirc only a few were made.  When it came to the NA coast, it  only come with the inline-6, no 4cyc option.  From 99-00 it was the single Vanos (BMW's advanced timing control) and had a different compression with some other things.  The 01-02 Coupe's had a dual Vanos setup which also had a single butterfly on the intake manifold, with individual throttle bodies on each cylinder.  Also has a different head design with higher compression.  So, the larger more powerful engine is less mod-friendly.

Well I thought some more about this over the weekend.  I found some Coupe's within 200-250 miles.  Some are reasonable for a 99-00 model year, starting at about $21,000, on up to about $24,000.  I also found an '02, has 54k miles on it though, but its listed at $35,000.  Actual value?  $23,000.  I've contacted the seller and waiting to hear back.  If I can get them to about 23-24,000 base, and then with my trade and down payment.. I should be pretty good on monthly payments.

I have a list of items for sale on another board that I am still trying to sort through.  Once everything is final, I will post the thread here with all of the parting out items.

I love those BMW coupes.  Go for it!

OTOH, there's a primo '78 Scirocco for sale here in ABQ.  Original owner traded in for a Jetta.  Only 30K miles, always garaged.  This is a truly, one-of-a-kind, seriously like-new Scirocco for $9900.
