Finally upgrading wheels
« on: January 13, 2005, 04:47:08 PM »
http://www.allroadster.com/mall/ronal-wheels.htm

I'm getting the R28's in 17X7.5.  I need tires to put on them though.  It's got 245/45 on right now, but i want low profile.  Anyone know what size i can fit on them that would keep the side walls at a minimum.

Also I'm still looking for S4 wheels.

on a 17" wheel, the closest thing to stock is 225x45, but you could also do 235x45 if you wanted, however that would give more sidewall which is not what you're looking for.

Nice lookin' wheels - I'm usually not a fan of Ronal's styles but the R28s are nice - as are the R38s which have always been one of my favorites.

I'm not too conserned about stock look, so the smaller the better.  Sorry JR but as soon as i get the S4 wheels i'll sell 'em to you for like half that k.

Its not just the stock look, but the speedometer will be off more and more the smaller you go with the overall diameter.

However, since the smaller you go the faster your speedo will read you shouldn't have any problems speeding and not knowing it. Just don't be surprised when you're cruising down the highway at 5 over and everyone is passing like you're sitting still! Wait, they do that already.... ;)

So you might wanna go 235/40 which would be only slightly off as opposed to 225/40 which would be way off.

I'm running 235/40 on my 18s BTW, which is slightly larger than stock which would be 225x40.

For 17s the sidewall would be:
Stock (225x45) = 101.25mm sidewall
235x40 = 94mm
225x40= 90mm

Actually Sarah, I just made plans with Randy to buy his Riva's. Let me know though, 'cause if you'll sell 'em for like half of what you go them for (? if that's what you meant...) I'll take 'em

Anyway, I know I could 40, but that was a joke ;)

i'm not too worried about the speedo it's already 5MPH off, and i found a website that converts it so you can know with out trying to find one of those radars that tells you how fast.  Do you think i'll need a spacer of some sort?

What's the offset?
I'm gonna get spacers for my rears probably...maybe.

I would think that an offset of 40 or less would be fine with the 235s on a 7.5 wheel and not require any spacers unless you just want them to stick out more for looks sake.

Oh yeah, one more drawback of a smaller-than-stock sidewall: more fender gap.... but I think the 235/40 probably isn't enough to notice visually.

Hey Hot Ani, you're hot ;)
You're right, spacers generally aren't necessary. Keep in in mind that you get more of / \ with spacers when you're lowered which results in greater tire wear.

I run 235/40 on my 17s with an offset of 35.  I have not had any rubbing issues, but then again on the B5.5 the fenders are a bit wider.

JR ran my Riva's with 235/40 tires on them and had a bit of a rubbing issue, so depending on how low your car is you may need to roll the fenders a bit.

No matter what it will be a great upgrade!

Just a few words of advice... Use the proper tire size...

Also, why would you need spacers?

That web-site you provided doesn't have the 17" available (no button to order it) - maybe it's a mis-print. http://Http://www.ronalusa.com/wheels/r28.html has the R28 only in 17x8.5. Just making sure you get a wide enough tire unless you like the stretched look. Also, I'm assuming you're taking advantage of the Buy 3 wheels, get 4th wheel free deal.

yeah I saw that too. if it is 8.5 then you'll have to do 235 or the tires will be like: /""""\

I've got 8.5s and my 235s sit like this: |"""""|

and 255s would probably be like ("""""")

while 275s would probably be like <"""""""">

man I love ascii art.

I will most likely stick with 235/40 as if I go with 45's I won't clear my suspension :?

I just have to roll my fenders this time

I have run 235/40 and 245/40 on my 18's.  I didn't do a speedo calibration for my 235's but for my 245s, my speedo actually read 3 mph faster than I was actually going based on GPS readings.  This is odd as the larger rolling circumference should have showed my speedo reporting slower than I was going.

Either way, I only had rubbing issues with the 235's in the front and that was when I was really low.  With the 245's I have rubbing all over the place with the coilovers, but now with the Bilsteins, they rub less.  I can't wait to go back to 235's in the spring.

Best of luck Sarah and enjoy your new wheels.

Be sure and check out the Audiworld.com, vwvortex.com and clubb5.com classifieds for the S4 wheels as I see them for sale all of the time.

Randy, I thought they were 45 series?
Either way...I barely had 2mm of space between a suspension link and my tire 8O
The link moved with the wheel so that did 'cause rubbing, but I noticed that I could really go any larger...

either 235/40 or 235/45 will be fine. Use 235/45 to keep the stock diameter. You can still do 225/45, but as mentioned earlier it will look like this: /""""\

235s will be nice and flush.

Is the offset 35?

Officially for sale.  It looks like i'm goin for the lowrider style, i'm so disappointed.  I'm still not sure what the offset is, but they clear everything.  I'm never gonna get cool wheels.
