went a little mod crazy this weekend....
« on: March 07, 2005, 04:17:22 AM »
1- installed iceLink, works perfect - highly recommended. It is up and running in the pic below - iPod lives in the glove box - I also have a mount, but will probably not use it unless I go on a long drive.

2- spent most of the weekend at Cole's trading trim - an extremely involved process (click at your own risk).

3- did foglight mod (enables fogs to come on when lights are off, and when brights are on). Actually Cole did foglight mod, I plugged the box back into the car.

Here is a pic of the dash trim installed - I will redo the shift area completely, so yeah I know it doesn't match right now but it will. ;)

way cool, can't wait to see what you end up with for a shifter.  I dig that wood color a lot, one of my all time favorites.

this is what I'm thinking for the shift knob:

or this (RS4 'air leather') another pic

probably just use a stock black leather boot and of course a shift surround that matches the rest of the trim.

Taking the dash apart almost seems like the easy part.

I was going to make carbon fiber overlays for my existing trim.  Charles wanted my wood trim and suggested that I make overlays with his A4 aluminum trim.

I ended up sanding all the paint off the trim with several layers of sanding until I got a very nice set of "brushed" aluminum trim. They look so good I am giving up on the carbon fiber project for those trim pieces. I may still do it for the shift surround and the piece above the radio.

I will have to take pics!

Sorry for the bad pictures. These were taken in total darkness. The trim really looks better than these pictures make it out to.

Nice work guys!

Looking good.  Cole, if you haven't worked with CF before, I can recommend a good place for supply and advice for your project.

Do you have a short shifter?  I want to add that to my car buy I am afraid of pulling up the wood/plastic around the shifter for fear that it never goes back in right or that the clips break or something.  Is it hard to do?

Actually the shifter is pretty easy to get to as far as the center console is concerned. Beyond that, I don't know what is involved with the actual mechanics of swapping out the shifter.

Let me know and I can help out when you're ready to take it apart or post some instructions. That was actually one of the easier parts of the trim swap project!

The iceLink hooks into the changer plug in the back of your stock radio. The first 5 playlists are selected with 1-5 of the radio preset buttons, and you can push #6 to gain full access to the iPod or control settings in the iceLink software itself.

The unit charges the iPod, pauses and starts again as the radio is turned off and on.

I love it. iPod just stays hidden in the glove box, totally stealth.

I'll continue talking to myself here and upping my post count...

Here is the shifter I just won off ebay (other bidder probably forgot about it, I wasn't even around when the auction ended!):

Its actually just the stock shifter for my car, but the previous owner had upgraded to the walnut which looks absolutely atrocious with the new bird's eye maple. Best price I could find on an available RS4 airleather knob was $98. 8O

Success!!

Just secured a shift surround and knob from an S4 owner on AudiWorld. I'm sending him my surround which he will paint black. Some screw up at the factory left his car with sport brushed aluminum beltline trim and a maple shift surround (should be black).

And yes, I have 3 shift knobs now (actually 4 if you count the old one from my G20t!).
