B5.5 Passat Wagon TDI-PD vs Lexus ES300
« on: April 28, 2005, 01:08:21 PM »
Last night on the way home a guy in a (guessing) gray 98' Lexus ES300 with dark tinted windows and 18" wheels decided to race me.  The first light I wasn't sure if he was going to race me, but the second light it was on   I pulled about two+ car lengths on him upto about 60 mph, so I was very happy with my 134hp - 247 ft lbs TDI-PD :D

This was the first time I have actually completely got on it.  I was waiting for the inital engine breakin before I abused it to badly.  I am right at 1k miles so I am not to worried about one race.  I will still drive it somewhat nicely for the first 10-15k miles depending how the turbo is feeling.

Are you going to chip the TDI?

I will eventually add the bigger injectors that way its a stealth mod that the deal can not detect and I might chip it later on also when the engine breaks in fully around 15-20k miles, but for now I think I just drop in a K&N Filter, open up the front grill holes that block the intake tubes to the air box and maybe check out doing a custom exhaust for it.

That's pretty cool! I wouldn't never predicted that.  I've always liked the Passat TDI, especially since it has that nice little 2.0-liter instead of the far weaker 1.9-liter TDI in the Jetta and Golf, but still...wow.

P.S.: Now, if they brought over that 3.7-liter TDI from the A8 or the 2.5-liter TDI V6 from the A6 (which I've driven several times, my grandfather had leased these for several consecutive years...with a 6-speed manual of course), then it would really be on!

Pumpe-Düse - Its a newest* type of direct injection that uses its own cam staft lobe to inject the fuel into the motor which creates a higher injection presure (around 22,000 psi) than the distributor-injector pumps presure (13,000-15,000 psi) used on the older TDI's (pre-2004).  This process atomizes fuel better which creates for power with less diesel, allows for better control over the injector, and is much more reliable over the life of the engine (never have to replace an injector pump).

The Passat has the high performance 16V L4 TDI-PD opposed the 8V L4 TDI-PD in the Jetta and Golf and its 100 cc bigger   The big difference between the Mk-IV and B5.5 TDI is the cyclinder head design and it has a larger Garret turbo with variable vane technology (no wastegate to control boost).

Yeah, I would love to see the A8 TDI here, because I would buy one :D

They are getting rid of the distributor-injector pump 2.5L V6 TDI 150hp and replacing it with the same motor in my passat 2.0L L4 TDI-PD 136hp, but with one little difference being TDI piezo-PD.  They are using a piezo transducer built into the injector the atomize the fuel even further.  This has increase the output from 136hp - 247 ft lbs to 150hp - 289 ft lbs without increasing the size of the injector or adding more diesel!
