Engine light blinking
« on: April 30, 2005, 07:18:15 PM »
I had the oil changed on my passat yesterday (Tynans VW) and within about 15 miles, the engine malfunction light starts to blink and the engine starts running/idling rough. It feels almost like a plug isnt firing?

I parked it within about a mile from where this all started. I checked the oil, and it doesn't look like they overfilled it at all...any thoughts?

I hate when random sh!t breaks RIGHT after i was in for a service.. makes me suspicious...

Should I drive it back or have AAA tow it?

if the light is blinking, tow it.

sounds like a bad plug or coil pack.

good luck.

Its always good to check the Denver BBB to find out Tynan's is not a BBB member and has an unsatisfactory record with the BBB due to complaints 8O

I had AAA tow it in. The tow showed up like 10 minutes after I called. It turned out to be the control unit  :?: -which cost me $650 bucks...but its running smooooth again at least

Until I learn a few things I'm afraid I'm at the dealer's mercy...

Thanks for help

Control Unit? For what? My first thought was a coil pack.

Sounds like an expensive fix

I bet he is talking about the ECU...electronic control unit.

I can't imagine it would go bad that fast, right after they serviced the car.  Has anyone had a bad ecu do that?

I had a bad ecu on a 2000 bug I owned, but there were many other issues outside of just a flashing check engine light.

makes me wonder what went wrong.

Tell me about...it looks like a lot of labor too.    2 connectors and two screws

You want a description? ...I got photos!

This is my "bad" one

Just googled the part number:

http://www.shokan.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1077

You are looking at a NEW HUCO brand ignition module for all 1997-1999 Audi A4 1.8t models. This is not the oem Bosch brand which fails regularly due to heat in the engine compartment. These are made in Germany and are becoming a very popular alternative to the $ 386 Bosch version that the Audi dealers sell. These have been tested on all A4 1.8T models to ensure that they will work on yours. These have a few names. They are called Ignition Modules, Ignition Stages, and Ignitors. You most likely need this if your engine is have random misfires. If you switch your coil packs and it still misses on the same cylinder than you can almost be certain that this ignitor is bad. It is very common on the 1997-1999 A4 1.8T to have this condition develope. This item is located on the intake airbox above the air filter. We are happy to bring you these German made HUCO ignitors for much less. 1997, 1998, 1999

Great DIY write up!  (I can't stop google-ing!) hehe

That is an expensive install for a couple screws and two connectiors.  But at least the car is working again!

We should've known it was that part based on the year of your Passat.
