Low dust brake pads????
« on: June 06, 2005, 06:04:41 PM »
I have to replace my brake pads on Wednesday this week and I was wondering about suggestions on low dust brake pads for a early model 2001 Passat GLX 4Motion?  The OEM's have a terrible amount of dust.  I can get my rims nice and clean and by the time I get home from the car wash they are dusty!?  So I wanted to get something a little better than the OEM, but not 100.00 per axle or anything like that.  Any suggestions????  Thanks in advance!

This is a tough one.

I once used Mintex Red Box pads.  They had absolutely no dust, it was amazing... but they did have a bit of a squeal and they fad quick.  On OEM rotors and pads I wouldn't get brake fad on a couple canyon runs I do.  With Mintex Red Box and crossdilled/slotted rotors (which help the cooling of the brake system) I would get brake fad realitively quickly.

So in short... if you aren't looking for a pad to do performance driving, then the Mintex Red Box pads will be a dream come true for you... no brake dust.

If you want performance... well you're out of luck.  The low dust high performance pads do about the same dust as stock pads.

Alternatively, if it bothers you that much, you could just buy some black or anthracite wheels!  Most of us probably have the brake dust problem. It is also irritating for me to polish up my wheels, drive around town, park, and see that my wheels have a slight film of dust on them.

To be honest, I would give up on trying to keep your wheels dust free. The OEM's do put out an insane amount of dust. I recommend heading over to ECStuning.com or Parts4vws.com and gett a set of Hawks, Pagids or PBR's. You can usually find a good set that will have less dust than OEM's but not dust-free for under $50 an axle.

Or, you could go cheap and do Autozones like I did temporarily. They actually outperform OEM's and also have less dust.

While you're there, you can pick up one of those nifty digital tire pressure readers (~$20 I believe) and some NASCAR paraphenalia! And a Type-R badge...or is that Advance? Maybe it is Advance.

One of my favorite sections is the build-it-yourself exhaust system aisle.  Pretty incredible, I wonder how one of those would do on my car...

IIRC, and from the extensive research I have done on these systems, I would say it would be on par with taking one of your pistons out of your engine.

BTW: I bought some chrome wheel well liner trim the other day and plan on going over every edge on the outside of my car with it.

I'd guess ceramics are probably your best bet if you're not going to be doing any serious tracking. For that price, probably PBR.

Very low dust.
Very low noise.
Reasonable Price $69-89.95/fronts and $39.95/rears ($28-$33/corner)

Just my .02 based on info out there.
No personal experience implied with these pads.
Good Luck :)
