Help Sarah forget Vortex BBQ...July 19th...City Park
« on: June 20, 2005, 04:32:28 PM »
Update:  7 July 2005, 12:48 PM

We are picking up the permit today.  Here is a map showing where the picnic area is that we are reserving:

There is plenty of parking around the horn, and a large play area for kids about 50 yards to the south (I will have my two boys).  There is also horseshoe pits and tennis courts to the west across the street (if someone has some horseshoes they could bring that would be awesome!).  Please let me know if you have any questions or need additional directions.

Update:  26 June 2005, 8:42 PM

We've set the date at Tuesday, July 19th, 7:30pm at City Park (I will post a map with the specific location in the park once I get the permit).

List of who's coming and what they're bringing:

1.  Ian - Grill, BBQ implements, Brats
2.  JR (jayryan) - Chocolate Chip cookies, plates, plasticware
3.  Hotani - guac and corn cheeps. and beer. and cups.
4.  Andrew (coveredbytheblood) - Soda
5.  Alan (aowhaus) - Gourmet Burgers (still yum!)
6.  Al (TurboDub) - goodies!
7.  Ben (BHase) - 2 6-packs of quality German beer.
8.  Sarah (337dub) - Cheesecake
9.  Andrew (34k) - salads, pasa, potato, greek medley sorta deli type things as well as additional beers.
10.  Dave (StarlightB5) - probably beer
11.  Jonathon (PasSoup) - some soda, beer, cookies, and a 4 1/2 year old.
12.
13.

Update:  22 June 2005, 1:52 PM

I just got off the phone with Denver Parks and Rec.  They do not issue permits for Sundays; it's first come, first served.  If we want to do something on Monday or Tuesday, we would need a permit which runs $42.  This would apply to City Park, Ruby Hill Park, or any other Denver Park.  We can still consider Cherry Creek or Chatfield State Rec Areas.

Rules for alcohol at Denver City parks:
-No underaged drinking (so say the rules)
-No hard liquor
-Beer and Wine are acceptable

Any other thoughts on locations?

(I am waiting a call back from the Southwest Denver Parks and Rec to verify they have the same requirements for permits.)

Update: 22 June 2005, 9:40 AM

It seems that City Park is a popular location, so we'll set the location there.  I will contact the Denver Parks and Rec to find out if we need to reserve anything and the rules about alcohol and whatnot.  The date is still open.  I'd prefer a Sunday, myself, but am open for any other day of the week.  If we're going to do a Sunday, I'd recommend starting at 3:30 or 4pm.  If we're going to meet on a Monday or Tuesday, I'd recommend starting at 6:30 or 7pm

--Ian

Update: 20 June 2005, 6:25 PM

So far, this is what I'm gleening from the feedback:

Day of the Week (options):
--Sunday
--Monday
--Tuesday

Time of Day:
--If it's weeknight, after 6pm

Location:
--really cool big park by Overland HS on Peoria

Specific Date:
--Given the recommendations above, I recommend July 17th, 18th, or 19th

Keep the feedback coming.  I will post updates at the top of this post.

Okay, I'll take on the coordination of this, but I'll always welcome help.  So, I have a few points we need to iron out.  I don't know if I can do multiple polls in one thread, so I'm just going to ask the questions.  Please respond in kind.

1.  What day of the week would you prefer?

2.  What time of day would you prefer?

3.  What park/resevoir/other location would you prefer?

4.  When, if you have a specific date, would you prefer?  Otherwise, generally when would you prefer (i.e. latter half of July)?

I will supply the BBQ (with charcoal and fluid and stuff), be the cook, and provide brats.  Will others be willing to step up and chip in either food or beverage (or cash for)?

I do't really care.  If at night I should be there... If during the day it might be hard for me to make it

If it is going to be a weekday.   I can only make Mondays and Tuesdays.

I'm ok with any day.  After five on weekdays.  Anytime in July except the last week.  I'll bring the pop-cicles and some guac...I make good guac almost as good as my cheese cake...hmmm maybe I should bring that too.  Oh and any park thing works for me.  This will be soo much fun!!!! :D

Oh JR, what are the rules about beer and such at that park?

My initial thoughts are Thursday, July 21st, at 7pm.  JR, I'm not familiar with where that park is...can you give me some more location details and I'll drive by tonight and see if we have to reserve space or something.

Thanks,

Ian

P.S.  Sarah, cheesecake is almost always a good thing

1- Just about any day would work, Fridays are a little sketchy sometimes...
2- 18:00 or later if during the week - anytime on weekends
3- whatever you guys think. Let us know about the alcohol and/or glass restrictions at whatever park or facility we end up going to so we can bring non-alky stuff or plastic instead.
4- I'm leaving town the last weekend in July for a week, so anytime before that would be lovely.

If the plans are made in advance far enough, I'm usually o.k. with planning it in. There are very few times that I wouldn't be able to plan around.  Just let us know!

I don't object to the 20th, but if you wanted to stick to Tuesday, the 19th is fine with me.  So is the park over by Overland HS, even though I will admit that Clement Park would've been a nice short ride for me.  We'd need to find out what the situation is with providing alcohol, as well.

Jesus...what calendar was I looking at...D'OH!  Yeah, I've updated the top also...Sunday, July 17th, Monday, July 18th, or Tuesday, July 19th...

And as soon as I figure out where Overland HS is, and the park is, I'll swing by and see if I can find a number for the local Parks and Rec.

Lalala...I'm back. Okay...OHS is two blocks north of Iliff on Peoria. The park is one block north of that. I don't remember the name of it though. It is in Aurora and not the most centrally located facility but easy to get to.

IIRC, there was an April Pre-DZ BBQ held at this park ('03??) I could have my events mixed up, but I think this is the one.

That park would be cool too. I've got my events mixed up. Winston and I were talking about the park I'm thinking of way back whena and he mentioned a BBQ/GTG there.
This was different then.

As for a location, what would everyone think of Ruby (?) Park?  Down off Santa Fe, just south of I-25...May be a bit more central.

Would that be Utah Park (small lake in the middle)?  It's at Jewell and Peoria.

I've seen one vote specifying Tuesday the 19th (which has been the only date requested so far)...anyone esle?

I've said the 19th is fine with me. If that suits everyone else, then I vote for the 19th as well.

And as for the $42 permit...if we want to do City Park, we could certainly get together that sort of funding.  I mean, just think that if 7 people come, everybody only pays $6. Not too bad. And it is central, so people who live further up north might not be scared off by the drive.  Especially if we're doing 6:30 and people might have to fight rush hour(s).

To keep this going, let's set the date at July 19th, Tuesday, at 7:30pm, at City Park.  I will drive by and find a decent spot, then pick up the permit.  I will also start a list of who is coming and what if they're bringing something at the top of this post.
