Something burned up
« on: June 27, 2005, 12:06:36 PM »
So last night while driving home I began to smell something electrical burning.  8O It was very faint and my car seemed to be fine, so I figured it was someone driving in front of me.

This morning I learned that the following items are NOT working:

-Headlights/fogs/highbeams (parking lights DO work..I have a euroswitch. and I can "flash-to-pass" with the highbeams)
-Horn
-Windshield wipers/washers
-Turn signals/hazards
-Rear defogger
-HVAC controls

My pwr windows, locks, instrument lights, brake lights, sunroof, and radio all work fine. I pulled the headlight fuse, and it was fine, but not any others because I did not have time this morning to deal with it. I have had the relay for my DRL's (173 I think ?)pulled for a while without any trouble.

Anyone have an idea what I should check next?

Thanks in advance....   Al

I would check all the fuses. There are a couple weird ones- I had everything freak out on me and it was a random fuse I can't remember.

Thanks for getting back to me so fast..I swear I'm so frustrated with this car right now... :(

I will get down there and do just that in a few minutes. Something about pulling fuses on a Monday at 6am BEFORE I had any coffee really didn't appeal to me today...

I did a search on Vortex...and came up with 2 possibilites:

The LRR (load reduction relay) or the ignition switch. I guess the LRR (R59) is located in postion two above the thirteen position auxiliary relay panel near the firewall behind the OBDII connector. If it's not that, I guess I'll have to check the ignition switch itself...Anyone know what replacing this shyt might cost and If I can do it myself?

That is a good thing to check, if there was a burning smell and a whole bunch of stuff just went out I would look at the relays. Fuses shouldn't brun and when they pop they interrupt the current so it should stop there.

The relays are kind of a PITA to pull and replace and unless there are visible scorch marks I'm not real sure how you can go about testing them.

I was also going to suggest ignition switch. I had the same thing happen to me.

I found a lot more posts on Vortex about this issue. So I am betting its a "bad" or more appropriately a "melted" ignition switch.

The stealership wants $290 bucks  but most are saying that the part itself is less than 100 bucks, and it only takes about 45 minutes to swap out.

Can anyone with experience with this confirm how easy this work is? I've seen a few posts that say it might require pulling the steering wheel cover, airbag etc. and others who say it just involves pulling off the top and bottom covers of the steering column...

BHase did you swap it out yourself? I swear I'm ready to trade this car in... Even though I love it I'm just so annoyed

Thanks again everyone for your input

Your headlights are stock w/ the only mods being euroswitch and no relay 173? Just curious.

Yeah I have a pretty stock ride. Stock radio etc. A K&N filter, the euroswitch and DRLs are the only things I really messed with so far. I've been tossing around upgrading other stuff (chip, suspension, wheels etc) OR just getting something new...At this point I'm feeling like I should just cut my losses and trade it in.

I found the part online for 27 bucks...

So it figures that the stealership wants almost 300 bucks to replace it...

I had them do it. It was close to when I first bought the car five years ago, and back then I had little mechanical inclination and even less mechanical skill.  I think I paid $300 as well.  Not sure how hard it is to get to it for replacement...

However, if it does require the steering wheel cover and airbag to removed, that isn't so bad. I did that a few months ago in an unsuccessful attempt to replace my steering wheel, and it took me maybe 20 minutes.

That would be awesome! I'm shopping around locally for an ignition switch right now... since I have no headlights, no windshield wipers, no A/C, no blinkers...etc etc I don't think I can wait for one to come through the mail. I'll PM you if/when I can locate one. Thanks!

Give Joel at RS Motorsports a call...he may have one.  If you can get one today, I can help you tonight...but you'd have to come over to the house; I have kid duty...

I stopped by PepBoys on Evans on the way home from work. A guy over there (who happens to drive an Audi 90 Quattro) helped me pull the bottom of the dash off and tested the suspect relay free of charge.

He confirmed that the relay is good, so it's most likely a bad ignition switch. He was able to order me one for $28.99, which should be delivered by tomorrow morning. He knew his stuff and was more than helpful. So he has some good karma headed his way.  8)

Ianacole I'll PM you tomorrow after I pick up the part. Any time that is convenient for you. I owe you big time- thanks again!

Thanks everyone for helping me out...as usual!

Let's set it for tomorrow night, my place, if that's alright for you.  I'll be home around 6pm...I'm in Green Mountain.  After you PM me, I'll give you my address and phone number.  I'll review the Bentley's...I probably ought to ask on what vehicle this is...

One thing to check is the wiring harness for the headlights. Mine burned up and shorted that part of the system. The symptoms I had are similar to yours, and ended up buying a new harness and jumpering in the new harness socket. This is a problem that a few people with 2001.5 and up have had, but is low enough in numbers that VW does not recognize it as a problem. Pull the cover off of the back of the headlight and see if it is burned or melted. If this is the case I think I have an extra socket still on the harness that I bought. By the way, none of my fuses blew, it took me a couple of days to figure out and twenty minutes to fix with the right part.
Look officer, I really do own it......

For some reason I don't think PM is working for me right now. But I picked up the ignition switch. Give me a call when you get a chance.

Thanks again,

So Ian is the MAN and got my switch replaced. Out of the 12 or so screws it took to gain access, I think I only touched 1 of them.  :( The rest was all Ian, and I can't thank him enough.  :D

We ended up NOT having to remove the steering wheel, just the upper and lower steering column covers. The plastic trim surronding the steering column also had to be loosened up a bit.

If someone with a B5 specific Bentleys manual could tell me what pin 30 is associated with, I would be most grateful. As you can see below, pin 30 was the bugger that decided to have a meltdown on me.

So my car is back to normal (for now) and I am WAY psyched!

On top of all his help, he made a really good effort at scaring the !@&#@ out of me while he took me for a spin in his fast as hell GTI...In the rain no less!
