So, is Amanda ready for the school year?

I'm curious, with all the viruses going on, how many students plug in in their insecure virus infected laptops into the school network?  I'm betting Amanda will want a beer night....

Hehe, that's awesome.  This goes to prove my point that the academic world would crumble if held to the same requirements of the corporate world!

My wife and I are continually amazed at how people get away with stuff for her job and I always have to toe the line.

These days, you really have to know your stuff just to keep your computer safe!

I just fixed my dad's computer the othe day.  He had LoveSan and Blaster I think.  He could only work on his computer for a few minutes at a time before it would reboot.  He has always been paranoid, but he still was caught.  Too bad Microsoft doesn't turn on the XP firewall to start.

What do you folks use for virus protection?  I'm "new" to the windows world.  It bugs me that I have to pay for protection, but since it looks like I do, what's the best value?

Adrian,

I use McAfee.  I got it for free through work, since I use my home computer to connect there.  I have also used Norton and find both to work equally well...

I hate paying for that too...

Wow Wendy, I read your other thread and I am sorry.  You might try creating a virus scan boot disk from one of your other PC's and running a scan of the laptop.  Make sure that the scan engine and the virus definitions are up to date before creating the disks.

Rascal,  I use Norton antivirus and Zone Alarm (free version).  Ironically enough, Carla was getting a rash of e-mails last night from a bunch of AOL accounts that contained the "SoBig" virus.  Fortunatly Norton's caught it as it was downloading and quarantined it for deletion.
If it ain't broke, take it apart and fix it!

That's funny.. I just now saw this post.. yeah the beginning of the school year was interesting with the virus stuff. The funny thing is, we were more proactive than anyone I know in the corporate world (except maybe winston). Several of my corporate friends worked in an environment where many of the machines were vulnerable, several of them servers.. Scary!

My group wrote some applications to automatically scan people's machines and do the patch/clean. We also went Draconian with our network and required that anyone who got on it was patched. We were only 1 of 2 universities doing such. Then of course, several companies and other universities wanted our code.. now we are still making changes and doing the network scans using ActiveX. All the other universities think we are the shit...so it wasn't too big a deal for us.. just a few late nights and one long weekend......

So Winston can bite me. ;)

Awww yeah!

Not bad for the #1 party school.  Maybe some of those students will graduate this year...

Oh yeah, and by the way, Amanda:
