I know it is a bit late, but did you ever consider the Saab 9-2X.  The Linear is still selling for a base of $17,821(2.5RS), and the Aero(WRX) $20,425.

We did consider it.  But frankly the wife did not like the styling as much... and they are almost impossible to find.  No local area dealerships had them at the time we were looking.  Due to this we jumped on the '3' - as we needed to get into something quick.

Sharpish little car, looks like it'd be a lot of fun.

The 9-2x Aeros with manual trannies were gone (nationwide) last month.  Not sure about the non-turbo Linears.  They were (are?) very cheap.  I think the Saab interior makes the car a bit nicer than the WRX but still not quite as nice as even the 9-3SS and it's 'sea of plastic' dash.

The Linear is going to have the 2.5 + AWD = less power than what we opted for due to the parasitic drivetrain loss - 165 hp and 166 lb. ft. of torque

Also, with the 2.3 that we have + FWD = great gas mileage (around 30 in the city right now) which is another reason we opted for the '3' and does not have the amount of parasitic hp loss as the linear.  The '3's numbers are 160hp and 150 tq minus the parasitic AWD loss.

On top of all that McDonalds is the only dealership - and we met with two others - that were willing to pay the Passat off AND discount the sticker on the car we wanted.  In the end, even if we liked the Linear better it would have cost us more, hit us harder on gas, been less of a performer, and not have had the options we got for the price.... three reasons again, why we went with the '3'.

So, again to answer your question.... we considered the 9-2X for a minute.

Even though it was a quick purchase - reasons that were out of our hands - I still do my research before I buy to make sure it is the right 'fit' for us.

I did not know this...  If you want, take a minute to read the catalog and view the notes (color coded) at the end:

Interesting to see that Mazda warranties certain performance parts and accessories - some for the entire length of your car's original warranty.  The one exception being the accessories listed as 'orange'.

I am impressed....
