Anyone planning a TB change end of the year or early next?
« on: August 15, 2005, 02:17:19 AM »
I currently have 50,000k miles and thinking I will be in need for a timing belt change around late winter.  Since dealerships are asking an arm and a leg for this job and ECS Tuning provides a nice TB kit at a reasonable price, I was wondering if anyone else will be due for a TB change at that time? A possible garage day.

Cole would probably be a good person to ask.  He did his on his 2.7T, so I would assume it would be pretty similar to his, only a bit easier.  I know it is quite different than the 1.8T for obvious reasons.

I'm doing mine (1.8t) August 28th.  Should only take a couple of hours.  If you want help, we should be able to knock out a couple of cars that day...

I think I am free that Sunday.  Though I am not familiar with a TB change out, I can offer an extra pair of hands.
If it ain't broke, take it apart and fix it!

I have about 10,000 miles til my TB change, so I don't think I will be doing it that anytime soon.

Blauparts seem like an excellent source for quality parts.
Are the tool rentals they are offering (if you buy a kit) neccessary? Will it result in a better or easier install?

Also, I noticed that Blauparts are pushing the Improved Valve Cover Gasket Kit on that same page.  Would it be good to do this at the same time too to prevent any problems down the line?

I have the tools, which I'm willing to sell. It is the camshaft locking tool (for locking at TDC) and the crankshaft pulley holder thingie.  I forget the real name.  The catch is it is for a 2.8, and I'm not sure that the tools for 1.8T and 2.8 are the same...

If they are, and you're interested, feel free to PM me.

I didn't even know we had any other B5 2.8's in the club. I thought you, some really short-lived members, and I were the only ones with the 6'er.

You could do it at the same time, but I don't see any problems with not doing them.  Ian and I replaced mine a few weeks ago because I was puting out a plume of smoke after the covers cooled.  You might think about replacing the breather hose.  It has been known to clog up and cause the left valve cover to fail.

I'm at 48k so don't need it right away either. I was planning on waiting till 60k, which might not be for another year or so. Alan, what mileage are you shooting for to do the change?

Yes, just not giant plums.  I was thinking we should have used some sealant as well.

Well, if you want we can always pull them back apart and put some sealant on.  Should be easier this time around...or, we could give it a few more weeks and see if it's just residual burning off...

I still need to put the new breather hose on as well.

Ok, I'm really overdue.  I think my car's got 85,000 miles or so, on the original belts.  AOWHAUS, I'd like to join you on this one, keep me in the loop on the planning.

Thanks,
Mike
