what do you think of these wheels?
« on: August 06, 2005, 04:06:28 AM »
I'm itching to get a summer set of 18" and use my 17" BBS RKs as my winter set.  I really like BBS wheels since they look so right on our cars and they are so well made.  I really like my RK's but BBS discountinued the 18" size (except for the very expensive 2-piece version), and it's hard to find deals on them, even on used sets.

I came across a good deal on a set of 18" BBS RZ, which looks nice and has a reasonable weight.  It doesn't have the traditional cross lace look to them, but I think it really complements the look of the Passat.
What do you think?

These pics below are of the BBS RA which are visually very similar but with less of a lip and the spokes are not as rounded:

Those look nice.

If I had a car with a 5X112 bolt pattern I would roll W8 wheels for sure. thats just me though.

It isn't that they look bad, I just like so many other wheels more.

Alan, I think they look good BUT I personally like the RG-R's the best.  But it depends on the deal you are getting.  Sometimes you just cannot pass up a smoking hot deal (if that's the case.)

Good luck!

If you can get a good deal on them, then go for them.  I like BBS.

I love the RGRs too but they are almost three times more expensive.

I think they are awesome. That Passat needs lowering though.

Those wheels look nice but they would totally look better if that Passat was dropped. Or if there were some thicker tires on there.

I've got BBS RK's on my wife's Protege5 and they look pretty good IMO.

Got em for about $450 on Ebay!!

I say the BMW CSL reps look good.  I just think they would look better if they didnt have as much metalic flake in the paint.

second set is better.

first set would look better on a smaller, visually lighter car than the passat.

yeah, I agree.
Eventhough I am partial to BBS's, and I can't afford any other style of BBS wheels, the BMW CSL replicas I think really complements my B5.5.
The CSLs shown above are 19", but for practical reasons and the generally bad conditions of Denver roads I'm going with 18".

I'm going to use my current 17" BBS RKs for my winter set this season and (if the proper size is available) mount a set of those new synthetic diamond studded snow tires on them.

I've not seen these before.  Do tell more.....

What about a good set of studless winters?  (Nokian or Vredestein Sp?)

I have been a loyal fan of Blizzaks, but this thread is making me considering a set of Green Diamond Tires:
http://www.rmcb5.com/ftopic-3203.html

It has been endorsed by certain states who outlawed studded tires, it was tested by the Swedish Road and Transport Institute (one of only two ISO Certified facilities for testing snow tires in the world), and here Land Rover Denver South has made them a dealer installed option.
Also, it's a great way of reducing the amount of old tires ending up in landfills.

Hey guys, where might i obtain those replica CSL's for a B5 S4?  I'm really lookin into a set of new wheels and those are effin gorgeous.  I've always like them on the M3's and have never been able to find anything similar that wasn't 550+ per wheel.

Are you kidding me?!
HRE's are obscenely expensive (and beautiful eventhough I'm not a big fan of chrome wheels), about 6 or 7 times more expensive than what I want to spend.  I also heard some quality issues with them on Passat World.

Sportecs are nice, but I think they look too much like the B5.5 stock 16" wheels (but larger and with one extra spoke). They are 3 times more what I want to spend.

I'm going with the CSL replicas.  Handsome looking and reasonably priced.

Good choice - those will look nice. I want to hear all about the diamond tires and how well they do on snow/ice - I might be getting a set when my winter tires are gone.
