What engine goes into that thing? It'd be kinda cool if you could get something like a 1.9TDI to fit in there, but it doesn't look like it...(if y'all hadn't noticed by now, I've kinda gotten into the whole diesel tuning thing)

the engine is air cooled so any thing like that would be a ton of fab work. but totally rad like you say. their is no motor right now, the stocker is 1600cc but you can get engine packages that run up to 26xx cc's probly more.

with an old bug, a boxer style engine is important too, so if one were to "upgrade" the motor, typical options are for 60's and 70's. aircooled p-car motors.  if making the switch to water cooled, then later p-car motors are possible, and as much as I hate to admit it, the WRX engine makes for a nice conversion.   8O

You can get put the WRX 2.0t into a bug?  Crazy! Can you put in the STi 2.5? Greg did say it can fit up to 26xx cc engines...

I was talking about 2600 cc aircooled motor just like the 1600 but bored a 1000cc
The motor that im planing on building is closer to 2000cc's for relibility.

I found a site on line that sells turn key suby engine's for like 6-8G's @ 300 hp. for refrense the stock 1600 has about 60hp :D

yep EJ20T and EJ22T conversions are pretty popular not many doing the 2.5 yet.

see more here (also the site above the linked forum might be a help to blueGolf as he dives into this project).

I know they have but the wrx motors in the micro busses.  those things haul...but difficult to get air ducted into the intercooler.  The ej25t is not that much bigger than the ej20t....mainly the heads are bigger and stick out more...I bet it could fit.

Now that would be a monster...a 300hp turbo baja bug.  and mount the intercooler on the roof like others have done :)

Oh, and I'd vote for the OD green.

Okay, so here's where the Porsche geek steps in and says his bit. The original Porsche to be commonly called the People's Porsche or "Volksporsche" was the 914. At one point, someone in the press dubbed it the "Vo-Po", though aparently Porsche marketing people took exception to that name and suposedly begged the euorpean press not to use it.

This name was in part due to the fact the development of the 914 was a joint venture between Porsche and Volkswagen. Volkswagen to fill the gap left by the departing Karmann Ghia and Porsche to be the successor to my car, the 912. Early 914 examples in europe carried both the VW logo and the Porsche logo.

The plan was that VW would build the shells (at the Karmann factory I believe) and develop a 4 cylinder version and Porsche would buy the shells and develop their 6 cylinder version called the 914/6 based on the early 911 two-liter engine. The story goes that VW charged so much more for the shells than Porsche had anticipated that the price of a 914/6 was biting on the heels of the 911 where as the 914/4, while it cost quite a bit more than the departing Ghia, was still 1/3 less than the 914/6. The whole thing was a disaster for Porsche. What saved the car to some degree was its popularity here in the States. Porsche ceased production of the 914/6 and introduced the 924 as its entry level vehicle. The 924's history is interesting as well since it actually started as a Porsche project for VW and was assembled at an Audi factory.

Since the 914, the most affordable Porsche has typically been called the People's Porsche including the 924 and especially the 944. This has even to some degree retro-activly been applied to the 912, though its origins are plainly the earlier 914.
