There was talk of a Scotch tasting....
« on: September 22, 2005, 02:43:06 PM »
(original post is below)

This event will take place on Friday, Oct. 14th at Alan's downtown abode at 7:30 in the PM.

Address:
Saint Lukes Lofts
1860 Washington Street, #604
Denver, CO 80203
(southeast corner of 19th and Washington)

Here is a map.

my phone: 720.221.7650

Attendees:
Will most likely attend:
- Me/Charles (hotani)
- Joel (jfrahm)
- Cole
- Alan (aowhaus)

May attend (not confirmed):
- Randy (kraut-sled)
- Jeremy (evil_O)

-------------------------------------------

So? :D

I've been becoming gradually more and more interested in the Scotch and wouldn't mind at all picking up a bottle and either A) hosting or B) going to a rmcb5 scotch tasting. Anyone interested?

I could host it, but those of you who have seen my new place know its a tad small and way up north, but the option is there. I'd be more than willing to cook and host. My place could probably comfortably accommodate 6 or so. And no, there will be no haggis - in spite of my Scottish blood I've never tried it... much less prepared it. That is something that was fortunately missing from the family reunions as I was growing up!

We're talking quality not quantity here - not planning on 'putting away' anyone's precious bottle of liquid gold, but I hope people would be willing to share so those of us that are total noobs could get an idea for the different varieties out there.

Of course, I would have to clear it with the wife first, but I could probably host such an event.  I have the room for it. I just had more driveway/parking space poured.  (for those that have been to my house, I just had a concrete pad sufficient for parking 4 cars put in at the top of the driveway by the house.)

I have some scotch I could provide, and it would be a good excuse to pick up some more.

Let me work on a date for this with the wife.  lets target mid Oct.  Hopefully by then my lanscaping will be completed.   8O

Andrew, you rock. That would be cool, and space is a good thing.

I'll pick up a bottle between now and then - thinking glenfiddich, as old as I can afford...

I wanted to do this too -- combine it with my poker nights, but my neighbors are not really scotch drinkers.

Eventhough haggis sounds vile, I'm really curious in trying it.
Scottish eggs are awesome though.

I have a 6 bottle collection at home -- mostly Glenlivets (various ages and casket styles), Glen Morangie, and a couple other Glens which I can't seem to remember.  I could even do it at my home since I have the kitchen to do the tasting.

Either place is cool, Alan has had several shindigs at his place; its a good spot for it and centrally located. However, I know Andrew would like to show off the new diggs... so you guys figure it out. ;)

I could ride the bus to Alan's... and smuggle my contraband scotch bottle in my backpack or something. :D

Regardless of the location, should we do potluck for food? I'd be willing to prepare something (not haggis) and bring it. Actually, since most Scottish food was based on a dare, I'd recommend skipping the all-out theme and stick with the Scotch whisky and some more standard grub.

I had haggis in Scotland.  It was very good.  I made it a point to have it while I was there... kind of thought I would be missing out if I did not.  I think most would be suprised at the taste  :D

Depending on the night... I might be down for this.

I'd definitely want to try it sometime, don't think I could stomach the preparation though... something about lungs.... 8O

Maybe we should figure out a good night to do it then work on a location... i dunno, draw straws or something.

I'm good with any weeknight, but Friday night is ideal. Saturday and Sunday nights I have the critter usually.

My vote is for Tuesday October 11th (I'm off work for Columbus day which is wednesday). Second choice would be Friday the 14th of Oct. How do those sound?

Hmmm. Friday the 14th would work for me.  I do kind of like the idea of doing this during the week though.

By the way I did get approval from the wife to have it here too.

Like Charles said though, lets figure out a date/time first.  Then we can figure out if you all want to venture up north.

If anyone is interested in learning some of the basics before doing a more sophisticated tastings, we could work on that this week.  That is to say if you know nothing or very little about scotch and would like to learn what some of the basic types are and the flavor notes within those types I'd be happy to show you.  Maybe this Thursday?  My place near Lafayette and Boulder?

I am McMillan from the clan McMillan... and I cannot die!

Being a total noob, I'd be up for a pre-tasting/intro-to-scotch-101/what-have-you. Could possibly do Thursday, or next week sometime.

I would be up to join in on this!  I love Scotch and Haggis, but not together at the same time.

I have a bottle of Johnny Walker GREEN that I would be willing to contribute to the cause.  Green is available here in the US, but it is very, very, very hard to find - and it is a darn shame too.  It is very smooth.

Pffft! maybe he was a McCloud, but I'm a McMillan (from the clan McMillan, etc...), and now I have his lifeforce since I took his head in a duel a few years back.

green?  I just polished off a bottle of blue.  It was by far the best blended scotch I had had so far.  I highly recommend it.  I still have a little bottle of JW gold left.  need to check out this green thing.

still prefer Macallen though.  mmmmm.

What does everyone think of the 14th?  I could host the gtg then.  For format I wasn't thinking formal scotch tasting, but was thinking of something more informal, gtg, talk about scotch and try a couple of different ones.

Blue = Best
Green = Very close 2nd and a WHOLE LOT LESS!!

Formal is good with me and so is the red-neck approach...couple glasses, ice water and bottoms up :!:

Also the 14th is good for me.

14th sounds good to me too.

I haven't tried any of the JWs, maybe I'll try to go to one of their tastings some year.

Best I've ever had was Macallen 18yr. Also tried the 12 and 'cask strength,' but the 18 was like buttah. More recently I tried Glenfiddich 12yr and thought it to be good enough to buy a bottle, especially since they're in the more reasonable price range of $30ish.

The Blue is very nice.  The green is also good... but it's no blue.  JW Gold is (IMO) better than the green, more Islay notes.  It's a fine choice when you cannot decide on a single malt.  Good blends also offer the full range of flavors in one dram, from which you can choose what you like.  That will lead you to single malts you might really enjoy.

The 14th is good for me.  If we can get a few people who want to cover some of the basics on the 6th we can do that too.

hey guys, sorry to mess with the tasting on the 14th, but I am not going to be able to host it then.  Due to a family emergency, I am out both this weekend and next, so won't be around on the 14th.  If someone else wants to host, then go on without me, or I can host some other time.

Sorry to hear it Andrew, hope everything is ok.

I can do it at my house, but as mentioned earlier my space is somewhat limited. Would be fine for 4 to 6 people - doubt there will be more than that anyway.

14th is still good for me. What do you guys think?

Nice.

Broomfield is a good choice, location-wise.  My place is also an option but farther away for most people.  We could start out in my backyard though if it's not raining.
