Tequila night: 2005-11-11 19:00
« on: October 18, 2005, 01:48:43 PM »
(updated 2005-11-07)

feel free to IM me with questions, comments, rsvps, what tequila you're bringing, general tequila questions, etc... (yahoo: ho_tani, AIM: hotani3). Or e-mail: hotani(a)gmail.com

DATE OF EVENT: 2005-11-11, 19:00 (Friday November 11th at 7pm for the timestamp impaired)

Address:
1080 Opal St. #103
Broomfield, CO 80020
phone: 720-221-7650
MAP (red thingy is pointing right at my condo)
Detailed map of where to go once you get to the complex.

Food will be provided. Come hungry.

A little background on tequila should you decide to bring one:
- "Cuervo Gold" is not tequila! It's fine for a margarita but on its own it is not very good, and a bit painful.
- Bring only "100% agave" tequila. If it doesn't say it on the bottle, its probably a mixto (like cuervo gold: 51% agave, the rest some other alcohol and coloring)
- 3 main varieties: blanco (not aged, or aged very shortly), reposado (aged 2-12 months), and anejo (aged over 12 months)
- buy on sale. Something that is normally $45 might go for $30, happens all the time -- snatch it up. Big liquor warehouse type places are the best bet for good deals.
- really good background and info at this site. Be sure to check out his buying and tasting page.
- for just a list of good ones, check my tequila page on the blog site.
- best place for descriptions or to look one up is Poco Tequila.

My current selection (so don't bring any of these, unless it says 'low'):
- El Tesoro blanco
- El Tesoro reposado
- El Tesoro aņejo (low)
- Corralejo reposado (low)
- Don Julio reposado
- Oro Azul blanco
- Milagro aņejo
- 30-30 reposado (it's 100% but doesn't hold a candle to the others, I typically use it for margaritas)

Tequilas other people are bringing (let me know so I can update this list):
- Oro Azul aņejo
- Corzo reposado
- Cazadores reposado

There will be some Negra Modelo beer, if you want another kind, bring it.

If margaritas are more your style, I aim to please. Be forewarned however, my "house" margaritas are best limited to 2 or 3. 4 if you're not driving.

EDIT (2005-11-07): If you want to bring a bottle, the best prices I've seen so far have been at Total Beverage. Check the online store to see what's available and what is on sale. Their regular prices are pretty standard, but the sale prices are REALLY CHEAP!!

Sounds like a plan! My only experience with "tequila" was not good. But as you mentioned, Cuervo Gold is not a real tequila! Try waking up totally naked, 19 years old, on a beach in Mazatlan with a Mexico Cop holding a towel saying "Gringo, you better go home".
I will never forgive my friends for that maneuver. $.50 tequila slammers and grad in Mexico... not priceless!

HAHA! Yeah, unfortunately most people were initially turned off of tequila because of a bad college experience with Cuervo.

Got em! :)

I always have a few pounds of kosher salt in the house, and will probably need the mexican (key) limes for cooking so will get those the day before most likely.

I still think they should use bad Tequila nights in "Shout" stain removing commercials.

OT, but one of the additions to this site will be an Event organizer type thing, so when we have these GTGs people can say if they are going or not, kinda like voting in a poll.

yeah that would be good - like a mini Evite thing.

I'm thinking the 11th for this - I'm off that day and can have time to prepare stuff.

Kinda, not as fancy, but since all the calendar options just suck, this will hopefully be a good solution. Hopefully I can get it together and tested tonight and have it up by morning.  Otherwise it will be later this week.

Sorry, back on topic.  I am just a tequila slut, doesn't matter what it is, I'll probably drink it. I do love margaritas, I can't really sip tequila much anymore. It's shots or margs for me. :)

Well, come on out and have some margs! :)

And oh yes, there will be food:

Menu:
- build-your-own tacos: fish or chicken with fresh avocado slices, cilantro, tomatos, onions and Mexican limes
- homemade chips, guac and salsa
- horchata if I can find some! :)
- whatever else I can think of...

I will say OK.  I am hoping to travel before thanksgiving, but no plans yet.  That date is right around when I'd like to be somewhere else though.  If I end up taking off for a few days I'll send regrets.

I have some nice Tesoro and Oro Azul anjeo I can bring.  Maybe more by then.  I can also bring Snacks and Sangrita de la Viuda.

Less-than-a-week-bump.

Picked up a couple new ones tonight: Oro Azul blanco and Milagro Anejo. Plus, I FINALLY found some tequila snifters I've been looking for since about a year ago - sheesh. :)

Also acquired some deer meat for the tacos - my dad passed through here on his way back to Texas after his hunting trip and left some ground meat (and a tenderloin, but that's under lock and key ;) ).

EDIT: Oops! ate the tenderloin - man that was good! 8O :P

There will be a few people coming up from denver (aikido folks) about 8, so the 7pm start time is very flexible, feel free to drop by whenever.

I'm not sure if I could make it, but I'll try my best.
I'm dying to try Mezcal, is that acceptable? or is it really different from Tequila (taste-wise)?

Tequila is to Mezcal as Cognac is to Brandy. Tequila is mezcal, and it's all welcome - I don't have any at home but would love to try it.

I will be there and a friend will tag along, maybe two if that's OK?  We have several tequilas to add to the frenzy and I will come up with some snacks and Sangrita.  I probably have 6-8 Caballitos I can bring too (I won't cry if I lose a couple.)

I'm glad I'll be around for this.  Off to Ireland next week.

Glad you can make it out - guests are welcome. If we need to, we can expand into Evan's room. Still not quite sure how many will be there.

I just bought 6 tequila snifters from World Market over on 120th, but extra caballitos might come in handy.

didn't get Mezcal, but I got a bottle of Corzo Tequila Reposado:

It claims to be the first modern tequila that embodies art, science and technology to create the purest and most refined tequila with extraordinary character:

CORZO employs a specially selected strain of yeast, and classical music is played throughout the natural fermentation process on the theory that harmonious yeast provide the best results.  Thereafter, the first two distillations are made in pot stills to transform "ordinario" into tequila proper.
The tequila is aged in small white oak barrels for at least two months.  Other fine tequilas would be ready for bottling at the point, but CORZO is distilled once again.  This unique third distillation isolated the very purest teuila by removing the aggressive "heads" and "tails," leaving only the superbly smooth "heart" of the distillation.

I know, I'm a sucker for this kind of stuff, but we'll see how CORZO compares with the others...

No problem. Hope you both can make it up.

EDIT: I am preparing Evan's room (my 6-yr-old son, he won't be there of course) so we'll have more space to hang out. Should be room for everyone, and plenty of food, and tequila, and beers, and, and, and... :D

I'm expecting about 10+ for this, people from rmcb5 as well as some from my aikido group who will most likely show up around 8, and even one or two straggling in after 10 possibly.

VERY IMPORTANT: if you are coming in after 8, the gate at the first entrance might be closed, use the 2nd entrance (see map below). It's kind of embarrassing, but I'm new here and don't know how the whole 'buzzing people in' thing works!

MAP: the gate for the 2nd entrance should be open, and there is always plenty of parking so no worries. Call if you have problems: 720.221.7650

And the lineup: :D
