I beginning to think I've been a little hard on my K03S...I think it's starting to go.  Is it worth the effort in trying to rebuild it?  Any rebuild kits out there?  Or a reputable company that can do it?  Or, should I just replace the turbo?  I don't want to go bigger; I need to keep the power as low in the RPM band as I can.

TEC in Golden should be able to help you out.  I purchased a 16g for my Talon from them.

FYI - TEC isn't there anymore.  Owner died a couple of months ago.

The state of Colorado is screwed as TEC was the only place that could really do this stuff. It is a real tragedy about what happened and it is a huge loss.

Ian- Thier is a place here in springs that will rebuild turbo chargers and other what not.

I want to stick with the K03S for now because I hit the power band at about 3200 RPM.  The GT28RS, as used in the Stage III+, hits around 4400 (Jack, can you confirm this?).  Very poor for autocross.  When I get the VW into road racing, then something large will make sense.  But then it will be a trailor only car, being towed by my new Tacoma Crew Cab...oh, to sleep, perchance to dream.

ian -  get the k04 and keep the apr software, just upgrade it.  power band is slightly higher than the k03s but the power band is much wider on the k04

Thanks for that Andrew.  Do you know what other modifications Pat has to his engine?  I read through his MotM (I think it was his) and I saw an MTM Stage II was in the future.  Do you know if this was with the II or the I?

No, I hadn't.  The power band on that looks pretty good.  Can that bolt onto the stock manifold, or is a full kit purchase required?

Yep, I have MTM stage three.  The MotM was from a couple years ago.  In addition to stage three (see HoppenMotorsport.com for details), I have a FMIC, cusom 3" downpipe, race cat and EFK.  Those all my power mods.

The stage III consists of a 5 bar FPR?!  Are you happy with the power?  When in the RPM band does it really hit?

Yep, 5 bar FPR.  Is that surprising?
Compare my dyno chart with Jack's.  You'll see my car makes more power and torque below about 4,200 RPM.  After that, he blows me away.  The way I see it, the rev range I use is between about 2,200 and 6,000.  I achieve full boost around 3,000, maybe a little before that.  That means most of my driving is in full boost range.  The MTM software is better than most, if not all, when it comes to delivering big torque down low.  It sacrifices when it comes to peak power at high revs.  So, you'll often notice MTM claims less peak HP than the competition, but the MTM cars are at least as fast in normal driving situations because of the increased area under the curve.

I am a little surprised by the 5 bar...I figured that would push too much fuel for the injectors.  I like hearing "full boost around 3,000;" autocrossing keeps me fairly low in the RPM band.  I've been looking at the APR K04 kit today as I have their chip and they would give me the programming for free, but at $1700 it still seems a little steep.

I'm not dissatisfied with the performance of the K03S, I'm pushing around 226/264 HP & Torque, with a good amount of area under the curve (I surprised the European Car folks with the area under the curve at the 1.8t challenge).  If anything, I'd actually like to push the power even further down the RPM band for right now.  When the car is a dedicated road course car, then I'll look at the bigger turbos.  That's why I want something relatively conservative right now.
