Supercalafragalisticexpiolodocious Upgrade coming ASAP!
« on: January 05, 2006, 08:05:44 PM »
This site is basically being held together by duct tape and toothpicks right now and I don't know how much longer we'll make it without getting hacked or just grinding to a halt.

So I have been working on a plan for upgrading to a slightly different version. It is more of a migration since the author of this modified software bailed on all his users in mid 2005. Since then I have been making security fixes as best I can to keep thngs going.

One person had been supporting this software while developing a new product which is faster and more secure. This is the route we are going.
I had hopep to have this coincide with a new logo and theme but the time has come.

You all can take a peek at http://beta.rmcb5.com it is not a 100% copy as none of the post text or seach words are there, but it is pretty much what we'll see happen.  The arcade will dissappear (it will be temporary) as will some other things I'm sure. It will probably take me a week or so to get everything ironed out, but overall the forums and the site should work fine.

I thank you all in advance for your patience, but this should be a step in the right direction. As soon as the upgrade is complete I will work on porting over our theme and getting the site back to some "normalcy."

I may attempt to do this tonight, 01/05/2006, so if the site is all jacked up later this evening, that is most likely the cause. I will make a backup of everything prior to the upgrade so we SHOULD NOT lose any data.

New site looks cool...good luck with the migration!  I don't know crap about forum software, but if there's anything I can help with, let me know.

I like the looks of this site more, but that is mainly because I am used to it.

With anything new, just a little bit of time and I would get used to it.

Ok, we look to be upgraded, was a bit of a nightmare, has a new caching feature and it was jacking stuff up. Looks to be straightened out now.  I will be working over the next few days to try and get our theme ported over and to get things "re-added."

Again, I appreciate your patience trhough all of this, it is for the better I promise.  Let me know as always if there are any problems or errors.

Out of the many forums I frequent, this is the only one where the admin actually maintains and uses his own forum.  Most start it up, and let it run.  I find it pretty cool that this forum has such a tightly knitted loyalty and interest among its users.  It's more of a hangout sport for friends that then a b*tch and argue spot for tough talking children (Colorado4x4.org).  I like it here.

Jay - love the new look still seems pretty easy to find your way around.  awesome job.

Oh and about the toothpicks - why is it that I have visions of you working on this site much like the guy who was on the news a week or 2 ago who built an 8 ft replica of the ship the queen mary out of toothpicks.

I am going to be pretty swamped at work today, but wont be going out tonight so I will spend some time working on getting blocks and the theme back in place.  Remember, if you have a logo idea, get it to me ASAP.

Lots of smilies HERE.  I personally found this one to be humorous, especially since I spend time on the Vortex:

Yeah, the conversion to SMF isn't too bad, but I wanted another interface like Mambo/Joomla and the conversion process was such a nightmare. It might be easier from straight up php-nuke but coming from a modified package it was a headache.

Yeah, I didn't want us stuck with the default team for too long. I know this isn't our usual theme, but it is nice and I think we'll stick with it for now.

How tough was the conversion Jay? I was looking at Platinum, but this seems to  have more upside.

Well converting from straight php-nuke to nuke evolutions should be relatively easy. I set upa  beta environment first and a copied the db over to a test db to run the upgrade a couple times before I did it on this side.

Platinum is dead, has been since shortly after I coverted to it in Spring of 2005.  The guy that has done nuke evolution http://www.nuke-evolution.com was so pissed off at the guy that baile don pLatinum that he took it to heart to build a better product.

php-nuke standalone is good, but it is missing a lot of nice admin features, has an assload of bugs and bad code because the developer wont let anyone help out. So people make different versions of nuke based off of the original, but it usually has a lot of bug fixes and enhancements.

With nuke-platinum we had about 310 tables in the db, we are now down to about 193. I think there are a few more I can get rid of. PLatinum, while having a lot of ncie bundled features, also had a lot of bloat and useless features.

If you are wanting to stick with a nuke based platform I so far am very impressed with nuke evoltion. I have been following it's progress since it started last summer. It is full release now, which is why I did the conversion/upgrade.

Of course, the risk is, if this guy flakes out like the Platinum developer then we are not really any better off. The difference here is he has assembled a team and that usually means success because it is not dependent on one person.

If you have any other questions I'll do my best to answer them.  In terms of things I had to do after the upgrade, obviously theme stuff, I had to re-install the arcade, but it is included with the distribution as well as some other items as supplementary mods or modules. So you don't bet the database bloat of having to install things you don't need.

I still need to re-enable the country and state flags mod. I would also like to get the acronyms mod working again as well. Then I think we will be set.

Jay, thanks for the mad new site flava!

I do actually like this one better.  Did this site get affected by the host's server move this weekend?  Mine did, and that was a headache for a day or so...

No, I know edition719 did. We moved awhile ago to one of the new fancy fast servers so we should be good for awhile.
