4X4- Shocks

So, this is fun, I have to learn again. I'm ugrading/replacing my shocks in the Xterra and have been looking at Bilsteins...naturally.

I have no idea what's good for what and so on and so forth or why some of external resevoirs (greater travel/baja stylin'??) etc. So those of you wheelin' dudes out there, what are the goods on shocks for off-roading. I'd love to have something I can pound and not have to worry about killing.

I thought I'd ask here since I don't want to pester Cole with  all my off-roading questions  :D

Honestly, I have no idea.  I will keep an eye on this, as I am sure we will be doing upgrades to Betsy's Tacoma in the near future.

I did realize it was negative, that came with my special title  :lol: too bad it's not the -4800 or something that I had to begin with  :lol

I'm expecting Jay, Cole and possibly Ian to pipe up on this one. Winston would be another good one I think, but he's not really around. Oh yeah, and now Jack, but I think he's still scared to scratch his :lol:  :wink:  

There's some cool stuff out there, I found the rockers I want as well as skid plates, but not sure how necessary differential or gas tank skids are....another questions for the boys of big wheels.  Hehe...and what a good tire size is for my 15's...trucks are all different.

Rancho RS5000's, hands down. Best shock for on road and off road use that wont break the bank. Not sure if there is an application for the X.

As for your post count, that is nuts! I have no idea what happened. I removed a bunch of old locked posts from the site, which I knew would impact some peoples post counts by a dozen or so.

I will try and look into it.

I had really good luck with my ProComp ES3000's on my Toyota.  Edelbrock also makes a really nice shock, but they're pretty pricey.

Hmm...Is there  benefit to standalone resevoirs?? And then there's valving numbers, what do those mean?
I'm looking at something llike this, it's the Bilstein 5150:

on my last truck we used specially vavled bilsteins and they were great. My dad just put a new set of bilsteins on his truck and they handle and ride very well. For a truck that is.. :wink:

I have Old Man Emu's on my XJ.  I like them a lot.  However, many wheeling guys just want a set of shocks that dampen and hold up to trail abuse.  We sacrificed ride comfort long ago in pursuit of performance and functionality.

Mmm...yes. I just ordered Bilstein 5100's from Spencer Lowe Racing (SLR). 20% stiffer in front with rear sway disconnect compensation built in the rear (20%).  :twisted:

If you buy a set of expensive shocks (really any shock) and are planning on off roading it, I would crawl under and measure what shock length you really need.  Measure Static height, then subtract the distance between your bumbpstops, then add 1/2" - 1" for bump stop compression.  Use this number and search the application guide for the right compressed distance. (ro better yet, find something you can compress a wheel on (loading dock ramps work well) and measure.

I've found that a lot of times, the shock they say fits doesn't, and ends up bottoming the shock out before you hit your bumpstop.  This will kill the shock.

It's worth checking out for the peice of mind, sepecially if your paying the $$$ for resevoir shocks.

If your trucks lifted at all, then you can play with different bump stop locations to allow for larger shock bodies. (within reason, of course)  1" extra compressed dimension should allow close to 2" longer droop dimension.   With your shocks off, you could work back from full droop to find the best shock / bumpstop combo.

Sorry, that wasn't an easy answer.

Thanks for the info...before I ordered, I actually gleaned lots more info off of RMXC.net 8O Yup...another club for me is all I need :roll:  :lol:

Anyway, high recommendations for SLR because they actually measure the shocks right and it doesn't become a guessing game.

I just checked out ianacole's new Tacoma...it comes with Bilsteins... STOCK!!!!  that is one wicked cool truck.

Can't wait to see the X....and if you go offroading, make sure to take pictures for all of us!!!!

The new X Off-Road such as the variety of Jack's '06 comes with Bilstein's stock...
Thanks to Nick at Detailer's Paradise, my truck is sporting the showroom shine it probably hasn't had since it was new. The last owner as great as she was kept the truck outside and didn't really was or take care of it well, so 4 hours and $45 later, my car is like new  :P

Now, on to sliders and skids..oh and bigger tires :twisted:

jay.   I just ordered my sliders today.  AC 4x4 parts is having a groupbuy on Xterra sliders (I don't know if it is limited to 05-06, but they are Schrock sliders - from what I have read they are the ones to get).  Under $400 shipped... painted black.  They have a gray painted that matches the roof rack pretty close too, but cost more.  The GB saved me about $40

Yup, those were the ones I was looking at. Cheaper than buying them straight from Shrockwerks...of course I did just get my shocks ordered...I don't think I can justify both purchases in one month.

BTW...on a test drive last fall, I met some guys up on Guanella Pass in some X's...funny. They're like el vice presidento and stuff of RMXC.net...pretty cool.

I know this may be a little late but hopefully still good information.

A friend of mine is the head shock engineer at Edelbrock. He was nice enough to spend some time teaching me about shocks.


Every company out there makes high end and low end shocks. Just because it has a good brand name on it does not mean it is a great shock. For example (sorry guys) the Rancho RS5000 and the ProComp ES3000 mentioned above are bottom dollar "basic" shocks.

They are a twin tube (one inside another) design. (not a bad design, just noting it). This is what you will see most of the time. There is an inner and outter tube. The piston travesl in the inner tube and the gases/oils flow to the outter tube. Not a terrible design for gerneral off road use. If you dent the outter tube it is not a big deal. But they are usually made with thinner wall material and hold lower pressures.

The external resivoir shocks you see are a single tube design. The tube is MUCH thicker and the shock body can hold much higher pressures. You will destroy these if you dent them since the piston actually travels on that outter wall. (but they make them very thick too). The fluids/gases travel into the resivoir. This has a couple of advantages.
-Better cooling of the fluid
-Bigger piston, more pressure control
-LONGER travel for a SHORTER shock.


And just FYI. I run the Edelbrock "Xtreme Travel remote resivoir" shocks on the Jeep.These also have Edelbrocks  Inertia Active Systems (IAS).

Cool...I'll see how well these Bilstein's hold up. Alot of the guys seem to like them. If I don't, I'll get something else.

I like the X Jay.  looks really good.  


I ordered my rock sliders... next (pretty far down the line) I will probably do shocks (my bilsteins bottom out :roll: ) and maybe a small lift.  But for now... with some rock sliders, the X is perfect how it is.... except I need the temp tag to go away.

Jack, does yours have any armor underneath? Mine has nothing with the exception of a filmsy piece of metal over the gas tank. But then, I'm not sure how much I need.
