wow, I'm another newbie, there's a lot here!
« on: February 09, 2006, 05:25:32 PM »
I just got myself a 2004 VW Jetta GLI and I was told about this group from my coworker Dave Kirstein.  He's got a 2002 VW GTI 337.  We basically have the same cars, so I'm glad I know someone that can help me with any problems with the car.  I'll probably join him when you all have a get-together or garage day.

Nice you finally posted, I guess my pestering finally paid off.  Jim's car is very nice.  It is a Black Magic beauty, do not let the pics fool you this thing is gorgeous in the sun.  The interior as  black on black and is sweet looking.  The only thing that he needs off the bat is to get the BOV that the last owner left on (when will the madness end!).  The car is solid and quiet, no squeaks and creaks.  I have ridden in it with Jim and I can tell he really enjoys the "VROOM" factor.  I have already asked him a few times what he is going to mod first...it is only a matter of time Jim, only a matter of time!!!

How about old members that add one later on?  I've been thinking....

I think Megan would tell you that she is well aware that I need special help...and have so for a long time.

And Mike, it's a BOV...Blow Off Valve.

Ah, "B" OV.  Got it.  I feel so inadequate now with my NA motor.....

I believe that was called a turbo bypass valve on my Saab 900t....  Doesn't the motor still need a bypass valve?  You can't simply adjust them?  That's how it worked with the snaab....

Yes, the turbocharged VW engines come with a bypass valve, but some folks replace it with a Blow Off Valve

The difference is the Bypass Valve will recirculate the unused pressure through the system, in fact the ECU counts on it. So when you throw a BOV in the works in blows off that excess pressure to the atmosphere and makes a neato sound.

However, on the 1.8T it can cause CELs and other issues because the ECU gets mad.

What Jay said.  Diverter Valve (DV) is the common term used to reference the bypass valve, or recirculation valve.

Ok, so a BOV is there to make a cool noise?  Does it do anything useful?  Why "dump" pressure instead of recirculating it?

Because it makes a cool noise... Honestly, that is the only reason to do a BOV.  Some units are now providing both functions, recirculation and atmosphere release, because of the issues that VW (and I suspect other manufacturers) have with BOVs and CELs.

It's my last opportunity lest they think I'm a dork for the rest of my life...which, regardless of what I do, will be the result.  But at least the kid in the Honda next to me will think I might be cool, at least until I roll down the window and he sees an old man and hears Dvorak.  Oh, well, I might as well accept my fate and just blow him off the line in my quiet, old man dork, way.
