15 or 16 inch wheels needed
« on: February 21, 2006, 04:37:27 PM »
I just got a call from the girl who bought JR's Passat, and she needs some help.

THe Emissions testing center will not test here car on the 18's she is running and she needs some 15 or 16 inch wheels (with tires) so she can get the car tested.  I would have given her mine, but I no longer have them.

Does any one have a set she can use.  I will offer the shop up and do the swapping for who ever can help her out.  There is an emissions center just down the street from me, so you will not be without your car's wheels for very long.

TIA - Randy

Isn't it strange that they will not test with the 18s???

At any rate, I have a set as well - I purchased the wheels from Alan.  I am in Golden if that helps.  I am flying out later today, so if she can wait until Thursday she can borrow them.  They are alloys...

I think that's plenty strange. I've definitely had my A4 tested with 18" wheels before, I wasn't given any grief. Odd.

I do have a set of 16" wheels, the stock sports for the Audi A4, but I'm in St. Louis so I can't help out too much, unless she wants to buy the wheels and doesn't mind them having Audi rings on them! (There aren't any tires on the wheels either).

I think they have trashed enough wheels in their time that they wont do it.

it seems odd since alot of cars come stock now with 18's. Prime example would be the R32, Jetta GLI or the A4 Ultrasport.

That's what I was thinking too.  Did the GTI Ann. Edition and the 337s come with 18s stock also?  Wonder what they'd say to me and my 18s.

I wonder if it has mroe to dow ith low pro tires than wheel size? Sicne they put the car on those rollers low pros might put the wheels at risk for damage. Maybe stock 18" setups aren't as low pro and clear okay?

a lot of the cars that are coming out with 17 and 18 inch rims have not required emissions testing yet.  I am sure when the time comes for these cars to be tested that they will find a way to not damage the rims.

I've had to hassle with these people several times about the wheel issue.
They are so inconsistent from on testing facility to another….one will test you no questions ask, the next comes up with several reasons why the will not

These people have ZERO clue about cars or anything but ....<bites tongue>........the reality of it is,  I was told by the regional manager that wheel damage has been a huge issue for the state testing facilities....and right now they will not test any car that is equipped with aftermarket wheels.......I explained that AOA and several other MFG's offer 18" + wheel sizes as an option....his response was if they have the logo's of the MFG they will test........

This was the stoooooooopidest thing I ever heard, okay may not the most, but very close...so slap on those OEM center caps and claim they are OEM

Also, my car is slammed, and I mean slammed...ask Pat, John & Randy...from center of wheel arch to ground is 24" , this was an issue also, but I was able to convince them on all occasions to test my car, waivers signed, tons of BS to haggle, but I finally got them to agree to test the car.  I was able to clear the dyno, but just barely....I have no clue what these testing facilities are going to do when a sports car with 19" and small rubber show up....they can not expect people to fit other wheels/tires for one test in 2 years or more..another reason to do away with dyno testing….readiness would be sweet!!!!  Or even just a tail sniffer and not the rollers

I'd rather they just did away with it all together.

Any of you guys hit up the RapidScreen emissions locations (van set-up at certain on/off ramps)? Just need to plan ahead a little bit.

You just drive by it, you ahve to drive by 2 within a certain time period and if you pass both times you are good for the year.

Just thought the RapidScreen might work better for a lot of folks. One just needs to plan ahead throughout the year and do the drive-bys.

Yeah I agree, good if you already have owned the car and need to not worry about the testing centers. Bad if you just bought or waited too long. :)
