probably the nicest flat paint job: SEAT Vaillant
« on: March 08, 2006, 03:38:11 PM »
This is a concept show car version of the hot looking SEAT Ibiza (based on the Golf), called the Vaillant:

Other specs: 240hp 1.8T engine (specially tuned for the Vaillant), longer custom designed front end, redesigned headlights, grille and bumpers, plenty of structural reinforcement (which involves the relocation of the spare tire), and a 40mm wider track with 19x8.5 wheels.  The flat pearl blue metallic paint is supposed to mimic the blue costume of the Belgium comic book character, Michel Vaillant, and the blue continues on the interior trim (including a matching set of racing helmets with their own storage compartments behind the seat backs).

SEAT Design director Luc Donckerwolke is responsible for this creation and was also the designer of the Murciélago, the Murciélago Roadster and the Gallardo at his last position at Lamborghini.

Nice to see a flat paint job that's not black or primer colored.
It almost looks like soft-touch plastic.

I wonder how they managed that paint, if it's comperable to regular paint, i might have a project that could use something like that.

Flat paint with a thin clear-coat maybe? Just a guess, i know squat about paint.

One way to attain that finish is to use a regular paint. Clear coat base coat. After the final coat has been applied a 400 grit can be used to matte the surface and then two coats of matte finish clear can be applied. It's really time consuming but it looks great when it's finished. Friend of mine did his 401 AMX like that with a deep orange, looked amazing!

Old rodders used to mix colored primer with clear coat at (I think) 2 to 1 ratio.  That would provide the flatness with the protection.

The other thing that irritated me about the Geneva Auto Show was that it is said that the Lotus Europa isn't coming to the U.S. Oh man! But we will get Alfa Romeo soon...
