So I found some good deals on the net for brake caliper paint. Why pay $30 a can for the Foliatec when it's only $8.99 from Raceshopper?

So we have a tailight garage day we need to plan. Anyone want to plan a caliper garage day?

Well maybe we can put that on the docket for the next few months. The tailight day would consist of:

Tinting
Rear Fog (Requires Euro Switch, $30)
4th and 5th brake lights

If we want to incorporate a caliper painting day too, we can do that as well...

do not use spray pait on your calipers, unless your planning of taking them all the way off. It is really much easier to bruch the paint on, and it gives you a better finish.

You will pay abit more for it, but the extra $$ will be worth it.

WHen I did mine it took 2 hours to paint them, but you then have to let the car sit for a day.

I've heard that you can still use the spray paint even if you want to brush it on. Just spray it into a paper cup or a jar or something until you get enough paint in there to use with a brush.

I'd be down for this garage day so I can finally get my rear fog hooked up and paint my calipers.

yep...only problem i had was a bad rear caliper, the acctual work only took 4 hours (suspention and brakes) the rest of the time was looking for a RR caliper, central forg. had one $50.00. easy

Well, I've done the caliper paint both ways. And to tell the truth, there is a reason why you pay the $30 for the Foliatec paint. It looks a lot better. The spray on stuff works, but it just can't give that thick, glossy finish that the Foliatec brush on paint does. I'm not sure what it is with the Foliatec stuff, but it resists dirt and other nasty stuff very, very well. As opposed to the spray on stuff that I did on my old Jetta. It looked good for about a month, then it started to collect brake dust and other nasties and it just wouldn't clean up well. Whereas the Foliatec paint on my Passat calipers cleans up very well with just a hosing off of the dust and dirt. I'm real happy with it. It is more expensive and kind of a PITA to do, but it is so worth it.

I don't mean to burst your bubble here, but I thought I would tell my story out loud.

Also, you can spray paint the calipers while they are still hydrolicly attached to the car. I did it that way on my Jetta years ago. I took the caliper off the car like I was doing a brake job. I pushed in the pistons so as not to get overspray on the them and taped off the stuff I didn't want to get paint on. Then I covered up the rotors and other parts with newspaper and tape. It was actually very easy, but like I said, the effect wasn't so great in the end.

Well, I have already scouted it out and I'll do the same thing by taping newspaper around the caliper after I have taken it off. I bought engine enamel, which should have the same effect as the Foliatech stuff and stay shiny. If not, I may splurge later on and buy that. For $5 a can, I figured I would give it a try though...

Yeah, Thanks! I can't wait for it to get here. The guy is in the military and is on exercises all week. He'll ship it out later this week. I'm pretty stoked!

I also bought a Zender rear spoiler from another guy at CB5. That should get here this week sometime. I have been wanting one of those ever since they came out with them. The price was right so I jumped on it. Hey, it's my birthday today so why not!!!!

Alan, I'm going Red. The enamel colors I found on the internet and in stores are:

Black
Silver (not very shiny though)
Red
Yellow
Gold
Green (lime green and only a couple of places)

Chas, I love those Zender rear spoilers. I think that is the perfect addition to the tail of the B5. I wish they were cheaper. If they were, I'd be on that like white on rice.

Yeah, they aren't cheap at all. But I am buying mine for $130. It's never been installed or painted. It's just been stilling in this guys closet for a long time now. Hmmm... His bad, my gain!!!

i did the foilitec on my honda back in the spring of 1998.....yes it stays clean, it is notreally a paint, it is a but a very thick enamel. it stays on, but over time it cracks and chipps away....half of it has chipped off of my brakes...
just my experience with the stuff.

Did you clean the caliper propperly Mike. That's the key to any paint job, prep of the surface. Before I paint any surface I clean the snot out of it. I paint my own healight lids and before I even put the first coat of primer on them I washed them in the sink and used hot soapy water all over them. As for calipers, the sink thing is not going to work, but brake cleaner is made of mostly alcahol so it usually leaves no trace, but a good wash with hot water in a bucket doesn't hurt. I was shocked with how much more stuff came off after I did that before painting my calipers with the FoliaTec paint.

Well, I finished mine up today. I did the fronts last night with Pat, so we could see how long this takes and it takes a while. Now we did have some pizza in there, but it still took 5 hours, and pizza can't account for that.

They look good though. I was surprised at how much I like it. I guess I thought it was a ricey thing to do, but it turns out that it just makes the wheel area that much busier, which adds to it.

I don't know if this is something we'll be able to tackle en mass on Saturday.

Speaking of Saturday, I am getting ready to post there as well, but I bought 4 of the quick connect wires today, which I believe is enough to do two cars. I took the last ones from McDonald. Who wants em for the rear fog mod? I still don't have a full show of hands yet?

Also if you already have this part, let me know that too.

Yep, that is the one. The CB5 post shows that it is actually 000-979-129, but at the dealer, they said it was superceeded by part 000-979-133. Ok, I have Mark down for one set. They are about $2.50 each and you need two...

Hey Winston - you have two options:

1. Fire your accountant
2. Submit the request as a "Safety" issue.

Yeah, I thought of that, but my wife won't let me fire my accountant. I think there is something fishy going on, but I just can't prove it yet... :lol:

As for the safety issue, that's how I got the initial approval, I'm just waiting for the funds to become "available."

Shouldn't be more than a week or so, or so I thought until I checked her brakes yesterday. Yow! They are even worse than mine. Her rotors have to be missing a good eight of an inch on each side! So, we may be doing hers before mine...

I've got everything I need for doing the rear fog. If I don't change my oil tonight, I'll change it on Saturday and do the rear fog. I'm not gonna bother with painting calipers this weekend. I also need to get under my car and beat my Chas-bar back into position.

Ok then. JR, if you haven't picked up this piece, then I have it ready for you. Also don't bother picking up any connectors unless you already have. We'll see what we need Saturday and go to Radio Shack, which is only half a mile from my house.
