RMCB5 drive in mid-may
« on: April 17, 2006, 12:37:32 AM »
I want to see how many people would be up for doing a RMCB5 drive on Saturday May 20th?

I was thinking we could meet at the Fort in the morning, and try to leave by 8:30 or 9am.  We'd have lunch up in the mountains and then be home late afternoon/early evening

Okay.  So I'll be at the Fort at 8am.   In case you don't know how to get there, take highway 285 (Hamden) west from C-470.  Take your first exit and go North (right) and you will see a fort on the right hand side immediately.  There is a dirt pull off there on that side.  Meet there.  here is a map:

or click me for directions (fort's website)

Here are the directions, maps to print keep with you (if you don't know where to go):
From the fort, get onto highway 285 south (hamden) and go 65-70 miles to a gas station in fairplay at the highway 9 junction.  There is a visitor center on the right hand side of the road, well pull off there (unless you need gas - which is on the east side of the road).  estimated 1hr to 1hr 15min depending on how we drive.
MAP:

After a break to stretch, get gas if needed, etc we'll turn right onto highway 9 and take that into breckenridge.  I can't remember the restruants name right now, but it is a great bar/grill.  I'll get the name and call ahead to make sure they are ready for us.  It is right next to Bubba Gump restraunt on main street.  There is parking behind it and we'll just park there and walk to the restruant.  It is about 25miles and should take us about 30ish minutes.  This road has some great sections.
MAP:

From here we'll talk over lunch and see how much longer we want to continue on.

I think Jack was meaning The Fort outside of Morrison just North of Highway 285.  I'd be down for the 20th.  The 13th, 28th, and 29th I have autocrosses.  That's assuming I have street wheels by then.

If not, we'll just steal some wheels off a VW parked in a parking lot one day.

Sounds good to me.  The one last summer was a blast, hopefully we have as good of a turnout.

So I have been looking at some of the roads and ways we could go for a RMCB5 drive.  There are some great roads... but as a total trip, I think the path we did last year would be really nice.  It has good straight aways to let out that all speed, and then good corners too.  The roads are relatively quiet roads too... and we don't have to pay for a nice drive (like if we went into Rocky Mtn National Forrest).

So here is my question.  Anyone apposed to doing virtually the same trip we did last year?

I'm looking for something that is about 3hr drive (will be roughly 4hrs with stops, etc), quite mtn roads and will drop us into a town or something that has good choices for lunch.  But we aren't going to go to that same restuarant we did last year... we'll go somewhere where we can get served.  There is this great little burger/grill in downtown Breckenridge that I was thinking we could go to.

I just want to hear yeh or neh for doing virtually the same trip as last year.

It was a fun drive last year.  I'm alright with the same route, unless anyone can think of another.

BTW Jack, what will you be driving?

I've got a K08 we could put on it Alan.  It might have a bit of lag, but since it is for a semi I am sure it will make your vespa do wheelies.

I really wanted those work wheels 17x8 for my GTI... I just couldn't justify the few grand it took to get them.
