Golf/GTI Mk6 to be released 2 years ahead schedule
« on: May 09, 2006, 05:47:08 PM »
Killing time at the airport I bought CAR magazine and read an interesting article VWs problems with the Mk5.

Sales of the Mk5 Golf and GTIs have been disappointing (with exception of the Golf Plus), and production costs have been relatively high.  It takes 40 hours to assemble a Golf compared to 20 hours for a Ford Focus.
Also Europeans have not been warming up to the new styling since it came out in Europe almost two years now, as rival hot hatches feature more aggresive and sporty lines and competitive prices to boot.

So eventhough many variants have been spawned off the Mk5 platform (a wagon version of the Jetta will debut early next year), VW decided to press ahead with the Mk6, which will feature a sleeker body with styling cues from VW's recent protypes (including the Concept A).  Eventhough cost cutting is the goal, standard features of the Mk6 will remain well equipped, including optional NAV, an MP3 dock on the armrest, Bluetooth technology, and the other VW features we are familiar with.
Mk6 models will likely include a 300hp R36 DSG, a microvan/crossover model, a revised Golf Plus, and an affordable soft-top convertible.  An official debut of the Mk6 won't be until 2008.

May have been Automobile.  I have that issue at home.  Interesting article.  I do like the tailights better, but I think from the side view photo they had it looks even more like a Civic Hatchback.

Ouch my ears are bleeding!

I get Autocar and Car mags from england, and they are very good.  I read that artical also, its sad owning a car that costs more  to make then they can sell it for.

andrew will be happy to hear about the R36... but by then 300hp won't be enough.

I hope they get rid of current Golf body style.  I am really not into the interior design of the latest VWs.  It is a complete departure from the everything before the MkV.  Even Mk2 had nicer looking interiors.

My W8 will be the last VW I buy, unless VW gets their design act together.  I have my sights on an Audi next.

Cheers,

I don't think VW is ever going to get rid of the Golf body style (maybe the name, since they will be calling it the Rabbit), as it is such an iconic and important model for them.  VW has always sold hatches (it's a must in Europe and Asia), and here in the U.S. they are quickly gaining in popularity.

I really like the Mk5 GTI, a much cheaper and capable alternative to an Audi A3 if you don't care about labels.  But, knowing that the Mk5 will have such a short lifespan it makes me less inclined to get it, and also the Rabbit will be priced at almost half the price of a loaded GTI which will cheapen the GTI name.

I bought my B5.5 the week it came out and I love being one of the first to own a new model as it will age not as fast as something that has been out for a few years.

Quality is bit of a mix bag with VW, while I love the interior and quality of the Mk5 GTI and Jetta (feels pretty solid), the B6 Passat seems a bit downgraded to what I have now.
