HELP! - A4 Started sputtering and freaking out on me today
« on: June 30, 2006, 09:44:18 PM »
I drive 30+ miles home from work with no problems, park and run into the store and when I come out and head home I experience major problems.

As I approach 3k RPM the enginge wraps up and drops in RPM in 1 second bursts.

Vrroom...dropout Vrooom...dropout Vroom...Dropout really consistantly untill I release the accelerator pedal. I have the tiptronic model and it does this whether in auto or tip. I have no CEL or extreme readings on gauges. I don't have a boost gauge so I have no idea what the turbo is doing. As the car hits 3K RPM and dives back down the car lurches and dives pretty violently back and fourth.

I really hope someone here can help me figure out what the heck suddenly just went completely wrong here.

Thanks,

Jon

Fuel pump?  Or would fuel delivery problems through a CEL?

I drove it again today around the parking lot and I could hear a whoosh as the turbo bagan to spool...I did some addtl. research and found that this could be one of many expensive problems including wastegate actuator breakage, craked housings, and other $ intensive fixes. Is there a way to test any of these possible issues? I have read that you can see if the wastegate actuator arm is loose by wiggling it, however, I have no idea what it is or what it looks like and where to jiggle from. I have looked at the hoses and lines, and dont' see any obvious problems, but as you may have guessed I have no idea what I am even looking for at this point.

I have already replaced the N75 and the DV both with stock dealer parts. I recently had the timing belt and valve cover gaskets replaced as well.

Thanks for the help.

Could be a big boost leak from a loose hose or connection, or a crack in a hose that opens when the intake is under pressure.  That can cause what you describe.

Since you have a tip you could powerbrake it a bit with someone listening under the hood for the source of the woosh.

I had my father come down today (much more mechanically inclined than I am) and we have 95% determined that my Wastegate is not functioning properly. I recently replaced my N75 so I know it isn't that.

Here's what we discovered:

We put a vaccum on the line leading from the N75 to the wastegate. We pulled out the air and nothing happened with the actuator arm and the vaccum held. I jiggled the arm with some pliers and gave it a slight tug and it popped loose. We put the vaccum back on and it and it will no longer hold a vaccum for any length of time. There is a loud popping sound when the turbo begins to spool and a large whoosh of air is also heard.

Anyone have experience replacing Wastegates or Actuator Control Arms? or Does it sound like I am completely up the wrong tree here?

Thanks

vacuum to a wastegate?  They generally see pressure.

Yep, according to Haynes repair manual;

"Using a handheld vaccum pump, apply vaccum to the wastegate actuator and check actuator arm and lever for freedom of movement..

Well I dunno about the wastegate, but the other symptoms sound like a large leak of metered air.

So I may be jumping to conculsions but I am pretty sure I have a blown wastegate on my stock K03. Of course this happens over a long weekend and I have to wait until Wednesday to speak with a shop about diagnosing the problem.

I am thinking that if I have to replace my turbo because of the damaged wastegate, I  may as well jump up to the K04. So in order to do this do I need to chip my car to get it work without harming the new expensive turbo or can I run on stock software for a few months until I can replenish my bank acct. Problem is, I just dropped a grand on a new timing belt with all the trimmings 2 weeks ago...

I appriciate the help.

Not sure about the KO4 but my guess is that you would need the updated software to run it.  GO SEE RANDY at Autobahn Premier Services.  He will take care of you!

Solution to the Sputtering
« Reply #11 on: July 07, 2006, 12:37:46 PM »
After taking the car into Autobahn the problem was determined to be a piece of "gunk", that resembled tar, had been sucked from the pancake valve into the N75 causing the N75 to act irratically. So if you ever experience this, check to make sure you don't have gunk in your N75.

Thanks Randy and Todd.
