I'm a firm believer in starting easy for the first month so you get yourself into the routine.  Slowly increase time/effort/etc as you make your way through the first month.  Building up to what you "think" you need to do.  If you push too hard you'll be sore or too tired and you'll get out of the routine.  That 1st month is the hardest, but once you see the weight coming off and feel yourself getting better then it isn't so hard to keep up with it.

I recommend a bathroom scale too. Weigh yourself every morning (preferably after making a stinky).  One day you are heavier, no big deal... but if you see the trend of you increasing weight, not so good... unless you are doing a lot of weights, then increase of body mass is the goal.

I can't see what your workout is... the link doesn't seem to want to work.

I started last winter, actually right before I got all sick and stuff. I have taken off 30lbs, I am slowly working on the getting in shape part. The dog has helped with that. I need to get into a rythm though, I get going then I get busy or go ona  trip and throw everything off.

I can't run, well unless I am being chased. I like to ride bikes though, which is just as good and better for the knees. Not to mention it is a great alternative for people that suck at running...like me. :)

I know lots of people that run and I agree, if you can run, you should!

My wife and I go in the mornings 5x a week. Sucks to get used to but
1. gets the workout out of the way.
2. Removes the "I don't feel like it today." after work problem.

Highly recommend it. Also helps start your day, you're pumped, feeling good about yourself, etc.

And yeah start light. get your body used to being worked.

Agreed. Running is supremely hard on the knees. Ironically, before I started running semi-seriously, I shot my knees to all hell from moguls/skiing and street-skating: 8 foot+ Drops to concrete don't do much to help in that area.
Over time, it's gotten easier to run distance, but I struggle alot and have learned to live with the pain. In fact, I just purchased stock in Ibuprofen...kidding.

Running for me = shin splints...NO fun at all. I ride my bike as much as possible instead, and hit the gym 3 times a week. I've been doing this for about 6 months now, along with a pretty strict diet, and have dropped about 20lbs. Breaking up with your psycho g/friend does wonders for your motivation level

Do those guys SERIOUSLY do 20 SETS of 25 situps??  8O

running at 8:30min miles is equivilant to riding at about 19mph on a bike for a given time (at 200lb, 1hr of substained speed is both 1250cal burned)

Personally I think running is harder than biking when using the calorie calculator... I question how high the biking is... makes me wonder if it is a older mtn with more resistance than a nice road bike.

I ride from my place to REI and back each night (which is about 12 miles) with an avg speed of about 15 mph. (18 on the way down and 13 on the way back.) This is on my mountain bike (A GF Cake 3)

I have no idea how many calories that equates to, but it burns more than sitting on the couch (which is what I used to do,)

I truly feel SO much healthier than I did 6 months ago. Now if I can just stick with it the rest of my life I'm all set!

I guess that's one way to make sure you don't buy anything at REI, which is what I would need to do :)

I am always SOO tempted to go in there and then ride back with whatever I bought. So I have been riding with no wallet and no bike lock. It's been working...so far...8O

You know... if buying sport things gets you out and exercising more... then what is the problem with it?

Wow, not something I would like to do.... way too much running which would destroy my already half broken knees :P  Not to mention my arms might fall off!

well, upon a little reflection I decided to give that program at the top a shot.  the problem is that upon going out to do a baseline to start this program, I was unable to do even the level 1 - week 1 activity set here.  So I have custom desiged for myself a 4 week ramp up to starting this.

It is the running that is going to kill me.

Week 1 of the above program calls for 2 miles of running (at an 8:30 pace) and 4x15 pushups, 4x20 situps, and 3x3 pullups.

I am now through 1 1/2 weeks of my 4 week ramp up.  So far, I canonly pull off a combination run/walk over 2 miles - 1/2 mile run (at 8:30 pace) then 1/4 mile walk, 1/2 mile run, 1/2 walk, 1/4 run.  not bad, in another 2 1/2 weeks I should be able to make the full 2.  I am doing OK on the pushups, only 4 x 12, but that isn't hurting.  4x15 situps is really tough to finish, and I am doing the pullups 3x3, but using the machine that you kneel on to effectively take away a portion of your body weight.  I can do the 3x3 at 85% of my body weight right now.

taking it slow on the start like this seems like a good way to go.  after only 1 1/2 weeks, I already am starting to feel better - I have more energy, and more focus.

Running would do me in also, pretty sure my knees, not to mention my lungs would give out on me... I *think* I can do the week 1 PT stuff, may try it just for kicks, but will need do the pull ups at the gym, no good way to do them at home for me.  Glad you are feeling good effects already, that is great!

I may have to give it a whirl myself. I've been slacking on running but was at 4x8:00mi. pace and currently doing 2x20 pushups, 2x7 pullups..sit ups? Yeah....not so much. I may have to start that program. Sounds cool.

tool to calculate running mileage:

This tool interfaces with GoogleEarth and lets you map running courses (or whatever), and gives you mileage.  I thought it was pretty cool.  Check it out:

Also, I'm curious about the Navy Seal torture program at the top of this thread, but I cannot read it (too small, link doesn't work).  How can I view it?

Thanks man.  That doesn't work for me for some reason (clicking the image).  But it's not important, really.  I'm not going to become a Navy Seal, or even a Navy Turtle.

Thanks guys.  Both solutions works.  The encoding trick is nice.

Try that software for mapping.  It's quite useful.  Could be used to plan driving events also.
