Sept 28-30: Great American Beer Festival
« on: September 06, 2006, 07:31:44 PM »
:beermug:  :beermug:  :beermug:  :beermug:  :beermug:  :beermug:  :beermug:
This festival (celebrating its 25th Anniversary) will take place again at the Colorado Convention Center, downtown, at the end of this month.

Over 2,300 different brews will be available to sample from microbreweries across the country!!!  8O

I had a great time the past few years, though last year I went through the festival three times with three different groups of friends separately in one night which wasn't really fun the next morning!
Anyone interested in going this year?  We could get together a group and maybe meet for a light dinner just before letting loose in the convention center!

Like last year, admission includes a 2 for 1 ski lift voucher and a fee pint voucher at the Wynkoop.

Mmmmm, beer!

AAARRRRGGGGGHHHH!!!!!

I'll be out of town.

We'll have to have a beer GTG at some point to make up for this crime against humanity (and me). How dare they have it on a weekend when I'll be out of town!

Possibly...we've been talking about it but not sure if we want to spend $90 (or so)...that's alot of six-packs. We don't need the vouchers since we've got season passes- or getting them.

yeah it's pricy, but worth it if you are interested in trying new beers from around the country. I found a lot of really good ones last year.

However, you do have an excellent point - now that I've been finding my favorite IPA (Bridgeport) for $10/12-pack around, I could get 3 of those for the cost of one GABF ticket - that's 36 beers!   8O

I generally go to the Saturday afternoon tasting.  Less crowded, real glassware, and the winners are announced.

$5 more at the door.

Holy schnikes! $50! I would love to go, but the cost is the main reason I do not. I will chat with Renee, maybe she'll want to go since we can both ride the light rail for free. Neither of us will have to drive...until we get to the light rail station. ;)

Yes the Saturday Afternoon session is a special tasting.  Well worth the extra money IMO.  The medal beers run out in that session, they won't be around Sat PM.  It's much easier to get samples and walk around, less crazy drunkeness (and vomiting.)

Thursday is probably a good option too as far as crowds and such.  Friday night is pretty nuts, Saturday night they run out of decent beer.

I went on a Friday and had a great time.
Sure there was a lot of people but it made for a very lively and entertaining night.  Nothing like watching the wasted fumbling (and hearing the ooohhhh that spreads through the entire place) and even better, flashing their boobs.  Just be warned, some of the middle aged biker chicks got a little too carried away!
All in all, everyone was really friendly (I'm sure that was the alcohol talking).

As for the beer, there were many brews (pretty much most of them)  that you could never find locally.  There was one 15 year old beer blend (I think it was blended with scotch, or was it sherry) I tried that was really good and it costs $8 for a bottle (a beer bottle size!).

Before I went last year I asked the crew over at PW for suggestions. Since that is a national forum I got quite a few, and none of the beers on my list disappointed.

Here is the thread.

Kinda dorky, but I went in prepared - had a checklist of all the beers I wanted to try and just cleared them off as I went, taking notes along the way.

only to those who underestimate the power of those small 2 oz. servings -- I remember last year there were a few who were puking in the bathroom only 1/2 hour into the start of the brew fest.

holy crap, two nights of beer sampling?!!!

let me know how it was.  I'm not really into beer this week and I'm feeling a bit antisocial this weekend, so I may even spend the money on a nice bottle of wine instead and chill out.

Thursday night was just to hit a few choice beers and have a low-key evening.  I was focusing on Belgian styles and a few of the beers that were well-regarded by the staff during the judging.  I was there from 6:30-8:30, maybe had 25-30 samples and then we walked over to Buenos Aires Pizzeria (which is great!)

I'm not much for fests, crowds, noise, etc. so I'm not really a good one to ask if it's worth going to.  I go to see friends, taste beers that you cannot really get otherwise, and so on.  There are some really amazing beers.  Curvee de Tomme, Angel's Share, Jolly Pumpkin La Roja (my fav from last night.)  Some great Biere de Guarde styles.  Some disappointing Saision beers, but a few good ones.  Some great Flemish Red beers.  Dogfish Head was great as usual.  Festina Lente, woo.

Saturday besides the medal beers I plan to have a few Kellerbiers (unfiltered lager) and get by New Glarus before they run out.

These days I'm not into the barleywines and double-triple IPA's so it's a lot easier to enjoy the fest without getting pig-drunk.

Saturday I plan to go for the afternoon and then out to dinner somewhere.  Let me know if you want to tag along, we will have the inside track on some of the really great beers.
