ENgine Light Came on
« on: February 19, 2007, 12:02:42 PM »
So as i was driving into work today my engine light came on and stayed on steady.  When i got to work i loosened the gas cap and re-tightened it, started the car back up and it is still on...Anyne have any suggestions...The car was just in for 80K mile service
Thanks

The only suggestion that I have is to get the car scanned.  Without that, we can't really know what's going on.

Even if it is the gas cap it takes a little bit to go off, like x miles and x starts. The code will be stored and as Ian stated, getting the code pulled will give you the detail of what specifically threw the code.

Now if for any reason that sucker starts flashing, stop the car.

Any ideas how much it would cost to get have someone hook up a vag-com tool or something similar?
Thanks for the responses

Where are you? Many people on this board have VAG-COMs and would be willing to scan it for you.

I live in Aurora and work in Westminster. I could scan anywhere around there.

I work in DTC too.  I can bring in my VAG-COM sometime this week (I just need to remember to charge the laptop).

I'm at CH2M HILL at I-25 and Orchard (Well, Syracuse and Greenwood Village Plaza Drive, or whatever that street is named).  Today is out (obviously), but any other day this week is fine, after 11.

Well, sounds like Ian has you taken care of, but I am also just outside Brighton, if you run into problems again.

Good to see more of is up here near Brighton.   :D

Well the coolant temp sensor is your CEL, the others are potentially issues, not sure if you are under warranty still or not.

That last one listed I use to get something similar in my A6 even though everything appeared to work normal.

The CEL went off yesterday on my way home and has not returned...So i dont know if the coolant temp sensor is an old code or not...The car was in an accident a while agao so not sure if the code is from then or some other time.  Unfortunately there arent any timestamps on when the codes are generated.
Thanks

Just because the CEL goes out doesn't mean the code is erased, if those are the only three codes that were pulled and seeing that it says the coolant temp sensor is intermittent that may be it.

I can't remember how accessible the sensor is but it could be work looking at to make sure nothing is loose. They are a common point of failure so I wouldn't be too terribly surprised if it is something on it's way out.

The seat and central lock messages could be from the accident, but if you just had the 80K service they should have pulled/cleared codes during the maintenance.

I am going to look at the sensor tomorrow, I am not too concerned about the seat codes, there werent any engine codes reported, if it were to happen again would the code be in there twice or does the mem only keep one copy of the code so it would need to be cleared first to see if it is the culprit
Thanks

It will only keep it in there once, so yeah, you would want to clear it and see if it comes back. It doesn't seem critical so I would feel comfortable clearing it and visually checking out thr sensor (if possible) then wait and watch. :)
