Timing belt replacement

Hello, ALL.

I just joined this club and this is my very first post.  

My son owns a 2002 Jetta TDI which is ready for a timing belt replacement and attendent maintenance.  I own Green Diamond Tire - West and have supported the TDI and Volksport clubs with discounted GDTs (10%) for several years now.  You need only read their posts to learn how well GDTs are recieved by those clubs.  From this date forward, I will also honor a 10% discount for the RMCB5 club as well.  

What I wish to do with this post is locate a well qualified VW mechanic along the Front Range that is willing to replace my son's timing belt in exchange for 2 sets of Green Diamond Tires (passenger) or 1 set of light truck GDTs.  You can learn more about these Icelandic technology tires at:  www.GreenDiamondTire.com  .  At that site you will learn that GDT have carbide granules embedded throughout the tread depth and is a year-round, all-climate tire that out performs studded tires.

Well, actually ice racers in the midwest are racing on GDTs and winning!  Because they are a production tire, they race in the unmodified classes and Blizzak, Alpin, Hakkas cannot keep up or on course.  At present, GDTs are built in only the most common of sizes.  As our US production facilities expand in capaicty, we will be venturing into the larger wheel sizes... with 17s and 18s being the on track for the '07/'08 winter season.  Thanks for your reply just the same.  ~rich

Well, my race car only sees dry weather racing - it don't like the cold ;)  I've only done 1.8t timing belts, never a TDI, otherwise I'd offer to help.  Sounds like a great deal...you may want to post the same offer in the Rocky Mountain regional forum of the Vortex.

once in a while we have garage days GTG, but it has been a while since we had a timing belt replacement day.
You could also give Randy at Autobahn Premier Services a call -- he's a long time RMCB5 active member and started his own shop a couple years ago.

I wanted a set of Green Diamond tires for the longest time since I've heard a lot of great things about it, but there were no 17" sizes available.  I'm hoping that size will be available soon (if not already), as I think I may need a new set next winter.  I have been using Blizzaks the whole time, eventhough they performed brilliantly, they are a bit pricey and has a relatively short tread life, so I'm dying to try out the GDTs.

I appreciate the lead... I will contact Randy in the morning and will tell him of your referral.  

We will start building more GDTs in 17s later this year... starting by adding 225/45R17s to the current 235/55R17.  It takes about 3 years of a particular size to be on the market before we begin to see sufficient quantities of QA-able donor casings coming available before we make the economic commitment to purchasing mold sets.

I am another VERY happy Randy/Autobahn customer.  He works on both my VW's and did my Passat timing belt/tensioner etc. a few years back and everything has been rock solid.
If it ain't broke, take it apart and fix it!

Thank you one and all for the endorsement for Autobahn.  I spoke with Todd this morning and along with everyone's support, I now have a solid understanding of the high quality of their shop.  My son lives in Longmont and to help him keep expenses down, i want to help him out by having him pay for parts and then I barter the labor portion away with GDTs.  In speaking with Todd, there seems to be only a modest interest in GDTs and not much in a barter.  I am OK with that and respect Todd's position.  I did get an estimate from him and if my son can budget that amount then, i am convinced that Autohaus will get the business.  I truly appreciate the interaction and support of this group.  Thanks again.  ~rich

I'm not sure how many locals are on TDIClub.com but if you haven't hit that site up it might be a good resource as well for not only the parts but How-to or even find someone to barter with for the work.
