SCCA Classification fun!
« on: April 25, 2007, 03:25:21 PM »
Is anybody out there one of those famed SCCA classification gurus? I have a hard enough time classifying stock cars, but I'm totally stumped on this A6.  After about an hour on the '07 rules, I decided to put this out there.  Here's the data on the car...

2001 A6 2.7T Quattro
APR Chip
245-width tires
turbo-back exhaust

I thought STU for awhile, since the S4 2.7T's run it, but didn't know if the chip made all the difference.

Anybody planning on going to Colo.Springs next Sunday for the Solo2 event, by the way?

Ben

I believe it would be one of the Street Prepared classes because of the modified boost levels the chip provides.  You're not running any upgraded diverter valves or wastegate controllers, are you?  You may try searching through the SCCA forums or posting the question on rmsolo.org.  I'll be at the event this weekend.

I'm actually not sure what is in it, entirely. I am pretty sure it has an upgraded bypass valve.  I saw your car up on the lift at Autobahn last week. Nice!

Thanks Ben!  With the upgraded bypass valve you would most likely fall in Street Modified (SM).

Why would an upgraded bypass valve make any difference?  It doesn't add any real power or performance.  I could see a boost controller or chip that played with the boost...

This year they changed the rules to allow boost modifications into other classes ( -SP classes specifically).  However, any other modification to components that have indirect control over the forced induction system (BVs, DVs, wastegate controllers) will still put you into Street Modified.  Is the bypass valve similar to the diverter valve in the 1.8t?

I was under the impression the bypass and DV were the same?? 8O  8O If they aren't  :x I also didn't think you could upgrade the wastegate on the K03- is that the case?

I would like to try and come down...don't know if I'll X the A4, but I'd like to come down.

If you want to AutoX the GTI, you have until tomorrow at 10am to register on rmsolo.org (register as 169FP).

I would like to come down with you guys. But i need to help my parents pick up their new RV. My father has to work, and mom can't drive a 37' 5th wheel. Well maybe she can, but dad doesn't trust her to drive the new truck, and especially hauling the new trailer.

JR i would like to meet up sometime and check out the new ride. You still working downtown?

Thanks for the help. I registered myself in as #2 SM.  First time throwing the A6 around the track...

Speaking of which, I've never done SCCA racing in Colorado (only in Missouri). How are heat assignments done? I have somebody that wants to come down and watch, but not for the entire day.

Don't know about the wastegate itself, but the N75 can be swapped out, which throws you into SM.

Oh and I'm going to apologize beforehand for the very chromy wheels I have on the A6, from the previous owner. No money for new ones ATM!

And one more thing...anybody know a good place around here to get some gloves and magnetic numbers/letters?

Eric, yeah, I do still work downtown and the car sits in the secure garage across the street. Hit me up and we'll do a line out by the car

Checkpoint racing may have some on hand...down on Walnut I think.  For magnetic numbers you can always hit up Home Depot or a hobby shop for magnetic material and cut your own.  Or, use painter's tape.

Ben, you can always use that new washable paint. I saw a guy do it on his Z06. I don't think I want to try it but I guess it works...

Ian, you got a helmet I can borrow? I'll pack my lunch and chair and setup under the awning of the Semi (RV)  :D

I don't work downtown anymore though..  :(

And don't play with your N75 on this car.  They are more finiky than our older 1.8T's were.

This is going to be good old fashioned fun! I'm trying to get out before the afternoon, as I have some stuff in Denver I don't want to put off unnecessarily, so I'm hoping they'll give me the registration table or course setup; meaning, I'll be there early!

And that washable paint thing scares me. Magnetic numbers here I come!

Yeah, but a divertor valve is the same thing as a bypass valve, which doesn't do jack to the boost level.  A wastegate controller is a far different story, that's what I don't understand.

All the DV/BPV does is recirculate the boost back into the intake tract, it has no control over how much boost is there.

Good...leave it to Ian to make me think I'm off in turbo never-land. From what I understand is the N75 is like the middleman, telling the ECU what's going on down low, receiving instruction and passing it on to the wastegate- the wastegate's like the company bitch in the basement doing what's it's told, in the case, opening and closing boost or something. Example, when I didn't hook my N75 back up, my turbo did squat and air exhaust air made the fan move or so's much I could tell

Ben, I asked for the exact same thing! 1: Event Setup 2: Registration...or was it a corner boy? Can't remember...I want to set up in the morning, I know that.

yeah and where to buy magnetic numbers???

I have a canopy, on both the rig and the trailer, and an EZ-up.  Morning setup may or may not be full, check the forums in the General Autocross forum for a "course setup sign-up" thread.

We do lunch in the rig - everyone's invited.

Thanks JR - I forgot about the camera.

This is going to be fun to watch - too bad I'm not SM any more
