That doesn't help too much. I have a full version of the software already and I'm cheap.

make sure you have access to a serial port versus USB....yes it does lower your sample rate...but its more seamless this way!

Neither did your original post. We know you have a B6, so knowing that you can always visit the ross-tech site, see which cable would be needed for reference. I believe you need one with the dual k-line capabilities. I don't think the B6 used a CAN interface. Ted would know for sure. ;)

With that info you should be able to successfully shop on eBay or on obdtools.com.

If you search the forums I think Dave (SweetVW) got one of odbtools.com a while back. I assume it has worked well?

Jay is correct, I did have a "dumb" cable from ODBtools.com.  I ran it on the Passat with version 311 (last version to support the dumb connections I think).  Since you have a newer Audi, I would suggest staying away from the generic cables.  I had to pony up for a Ross-Tech cable when I got the GTI.  The generic cable would not work with it.

ive been running a generic duak K cable ($20 on ebay) for 2 years on VAG-COM 409.1 (or whatever) and have not had a single issue in my 2004.  it wont log "turbo" but otherwise accesses all other crucial funtions and does just fine.  the key is using serial instead of USB.  the USB dumb cables do not work at all, even with the software patches the cable companies provide....its 50/50 at best.

Ahh OK, I did not know that there was a generic cable that worked with the newer cars.  My original cable was a serial cable, but when I bought the new cable, I switched to USB out of convenience.  My laptop did not have an onboard serial cable and I had to use the port replicator that came with it to get serial functionality.

Would it be safe to assume a generic cable would work on my 01 A4?  I saw rosstech's site, but am not a fan of the prices, mainly as I am cheap as well.

the only cable actually NEEDED (forgetting of course higher sample rates and the "newest" revisions of ross-tech's software) is for 2005+ VAG cars...examples being mkv jettas, b6 passats, b7 a4s, etc etc etc.
