help pick a new bumper for the rover
« on: July 24, 2007, 06:21:36 PM »
this is the POS bumper that is on there now:

I have pretty well narrowed the field to these 2 replacements:

ARB:

or this one from RoverTym

I am leaning towards the RoveerTym as I am going to go with their sliders, and theirs has that skid plate as an option.

when it comes back up you can see it here:

Nice, hmm, they are similar, I would go with which ever one is most cost effective.

I like the ARB a lot more.  They are very similar, but the ARB looks like it has more thought put into it and looks to be finished better, esp like the bumper just over the tires where the bars meet up.

ARB no question if it was my rover.

The rovertym looks to have a better approach angle and better corner protection. That is why I choose that one.

ARB probably is finished better, barely.

ARB is a huge shop that makes lots of bumpers for various 4wd vehicles.  Rovertym of course specializes in rover parts and works on a limited scale.

some clarifications on the pics in case that influences anyones vote.

- the rovertym does have light mounts too, that pic just doesnt have any lights on it.

- in the 2nd arb pic, the portion under the winch is the stock rr valance - it is removed on my truck already and is removed in the first ARB pic.

I think the approach angle will be pretty similar with both, but the rovertym looks maybe a hair narrower/higher above the ground.

I am asking this same question on some rover forums to get their opinions too.

I would do it for cost.

It really depends on what your looking for. I have a Millermatic 180 solid wire MIG set up and a chop saw.
If your looking for something more basic 2x4 square tube, winch mount, D-Ring tabs stuff like that I can do with what Ive got.. Anything involving bent tube, we would have to have it bent or find a bender.

Jon - Bender is awesome.

I would like some brush bars up around the lights that look like they'd require bending, not sure about the bumper itself and whether the chop saw and some welding could do the shape I am looking for or how that is done.  like I said - 0 metal work skillz here.  I'd be the one holding the beer and watching.

You would probably be better off buying. Im not equipped to make an arb clone.

and just when I started thinking really seriously about going with something simpler and just having you make it, a guy on the rover boards has posted a used ARB for sale up in Breckenridge.  If we can come to terms on a reasonable price, I might just have to go that way.

Awesome, I am covered in gear oil and grime right now from working on the Scout.

Maybe we need a 4x4 garage day. BTW, anyone know how to get the oil into a T-18 transmission? I'm thinking I need a pump.

Andrew, we are going to need pictures of this bad boy when you get it. I can't wait to see the rover with the new tires and the bumper. I bet it will look bad ass.

Haha,  I meant the link to the discussion on which bumper. I am curious to know what those in the rover community have to say about each.

Ahhh.  that makes more sense.  the discussion turned into one of sliders rather than the bumper.

in anycase, the best discussion on it was on the land rovers only boards:

I would vote for the ARB hands down, but that's just me and the fact that I know nothing about Rovertym.

I see tons of ARBs on Landcruisers and they are great, no question about it.
