No Spark
« on: September 07, 2007, 03:14:56 PM »
Hey all it is Shawn aka Bodaddio.  You can see the VagCom report from Eric (Dude You ROCK!!!!!!!!) below

OK, so I got the coilpacks changed and the plugs, needed them anyway.  I have no spark at plug number 3.  None nadda zilch.  I changed COP to a known good one, still nothing.  Using my test light I have power at the connection into the COP.  I made a jumper and have power on the other side of the connection and also power going into the COP.  Nothing at the plug though.  Is there a way to test the ICM to see if that is it?  I know I could take it to Randy, but I really don't want to drive the car with 1 cylinder not working.  Any idea guys?  You are all the smartest people I know!  Shameless plug!  I appreciate all the help.
Thanks,
Shawn

You're welcome; here's the full report.

Also, JrAdrock on the tex as well offered up these pointers:

Quote
It looks like one of two things. 1 #3 coil pack could be bad. 2. Early 99 B5 1.8t ICM is bad (Ignition control module).

Before you go and get a new coil pack. If you still have access to the vag com, switch the #3 coil pack with the #1 coil pack. If the results change to the #1 coil pack on the vag com scan, then it is a bad coil pack (i believe) no more than $80. If it code doesn't change with the change of coil packs, read below.

To check if the car has an ICM (later 1.8t do not have this part), under the hood on the passenger side of the engine bay there is a plastic shroud that covers the airbox. The cover just pulls off. This will expose the top side of the airbox. If the car has an ICM it will be located on top of the airbox. It doesn't look like much. It has two connectors that connect to both sides and it is thin. If this is bad, expect about (i believe) $200-$400 dollars and about 5 seconds of work replacing it.

Check and make sure the plugs are in good condition and have a proper gap.

Good luck.

I got it fixed! Found the way to check the ICM, yep is was out on the 3rd cylinder.  Found one at the bone yard, worked great and all is good!

Thanks everyone,
Shawn
