What would you do?
« on: September 29, 2007, 05:25:06 PM »
So I blew out the LF KW V3.  Called KW and they will warranty it, but I have to send it to them for them to rebuild it.  Meanwhile my car is down for the count.

I'm through with these, if it blows in 6 months, I don't want em.  I've got someone who is going to buy them from me.  Stasis has offered me their Motorsport Ohlins based coilovers for a decent deal, but it's still quite a bit of money.

My thoughts on this are two...
#1  Sell the KW's, buy the Stasis Ohlins and call it a day.  Continue to track the S4, even tho it runs through consumables at a ferocious rate. ($$)

#2  Sell the KW's, pick up a spring/shock combo (most likely Shine Racing). Sell my OZ SL's and race tires and use that money and the money saved from the Motorsports to buy a cheap ($2k) track car, like a 16v GTI/GLI.

#1 is appealing as the s4 is already pretty well setup, is reliable and I won't have to setup and maintain another car.  It's not the greatest as it's dumping yet more money into the car that I won't see and front rotors and race pads are $700.

#2  is appealing as I still have a very nice S4 for the street, I don't have to worry about balling it up on the track and I pretty much have a disposable track toy.  I know the 16v GTI/GLI's very well, I can fix em myself, parts are cheap.  However, it is a fwd car, which I'm not thrilled about and I would have to put in at least another $2k for safety equipment (cage, seats, harnesses, etc)

Opinions?

#2 - if you break a track car, you still have something to drive.

I agree with Ian, #2...then just enjoy the S4 for spirited driving around town, etc.

a dedicated track car can be a lot of fun, IMHO.

Yeah, I hear you guys.  I wish I had the cash to get a mid '80's to early '90's 911.  That's what I really want.  Or an E36 M3.

The thing that makes me pause on the GTI/GLI is do I really want one?  I don't want to get a track car that in a year or three I'm going to be completely bored with.

I suppose I could just sell everything off now and look for a track car throughout the winter and see what I find.  Might be able to have more $$ saved by then too...

real racing is expensive, because there is always someone with more cash and more car to try to beat.  track days are expensive too, due to the cost of consumables.

If you go with #2, be serious, the modding that car wont stop.  you'll be disappointed that your daily driver is faster than your track car.  you'll end up spending every day wishing you had brought the S to the track so you could get the better time.

Sorry man, but you gotta pay to play.  keep putting money in the S and be happy.

 ;D

(then again think twice about listening to me - I keep pouring money into a depreciating allroad)

option 2 is my preference. Maybe take the S4 out for a special event, but get a GTi to track with. I think you will appreciate the S4 more after tracking the GTi.

Well, the thing is, getting out to the track is getting harder and harder to do.  Between scheduling conflicts with daycare, Air Force Reserve duty and other family matters, I'm lucky to get out 3-4 times a season now.

My wife and I are discussing having another child, so that'll make two little ones to take care of.  Getting away for 2 days at the track will be long gone at that point, at least until they get a little older.

I would've been out 3 times this year, but I had that fuel pump issue over Fathers Day, so I've only been to the track twice this year.  Well, besides One Lap, but that was really just a really long auto-x!

That's kinda why I sold my 944 turbo.  It spent almost all of its time sitting in my garage.

At the same time, I don't feel real responsible dumping another few grand into the S4, that's $$ that I'll never see again.  Especially when we need to buy a house and I want to replace my wife's Passat with 95k miles on it.

Decisions are never easy when you grow up, eh?

Decision made.  I'm just going to run the S4.  Can't really justify another car right now, especially a 911 or M3 that I really want.

So I'm going to pull the trigger on the Ohlins.  I don't want to get something else, then regret it and have to sell it and go buy the Ohlins later.
