Looks like the Scout is in for a re-transformation..or something
« on: November 25, 2007, 01:19:25 AM »
Most of you don't remember seeing my Scout before it was converted to a Super Scout. In 2003 I decided the Scout would never be a DD again and that I should have fun with it and make it my rec vehicle. I figured I would have a garage for it and all that so I went and got a hold of some used parts and some new parts and let the transformation take place. It was a good experiment, but in the end, it wasn't what I wanted.

So here is a picture of my Scout in 2001 just before it went in for major cancer reduction:

Here it is after that work:

And of course more or less what it looks like today after the conversion in 2003:

So the plan is to get it back to be more like pictures 1 (sans rust). My hope is the guy doing the work for me might be talked into painting it for me too, just save me a step and some time hopefully.

Having driven the Scout almost daily for the last 3.5 weeks I have realized what's missing and half the reason I don't drive it.

Once the Audi is fixed the Scout will go off to Penrose, CO for some time, I am guessing 2 - 6 weeks. When it comes back it will be a different vehicle again, but more like what it used to be.

This I hope helps to earn it's permanent spot here at home without the pestering of "Are you ever going to sell that thing?" Plus once painted I think it will aide in the nasty looks I get from select neighbors.

Hey I know you will really like to get that thing more how you want it.  I'm psyched to see it completed.

Well the Scout is gone (for now)...all I see out front are the oil stains it left behind. It's been just over a day and it feels like I have been without it forever.

I should have it back around mid January.

Thanks Cole, I got to see the top it will be getting, it actually has a headliner! And I was told other than the parts that are currently green (old paint) everything should be primered and I am having the tub covered with a bedliner so that should spruce it up a little.

The After I get it back I will need a few in cab seals and then it's onto prepping the rest for paint. I have some surface rust areas to tackle in order to accomplish that though, and one dent in the front end lower grille to pound out.

And just for the heck of it, here are some more pictures back from when I first bought it in November 1998:

From 1999, first time I ever took the top off (you can see Renee's old 190E in front...RIP :():

This is shortly after the last pictures, I bought a factory repro roll bar and a bikini top:

Nice. What color are you going to paint it?

Hey Jay, slight OT...where do you bring your Scout for all of its cosmetic/repair work, or do you just do it yourself? A friend from New Orleans who just bought a mid-70s Traveler moved up here, to Denver, and wanted to know if there was anything around that was reliable...

I always laugh when I see your sig. :D

Unfortunately the guy that does my work, isn't doing it anymore. He stopped taking work about a year and a half ago. He has a few he is still finishing up that he had agreed to do and he is doing my work as a favor.

I mean it's mutually beneficial, he gets my old parts which are worth $$$ in exchange for him doing a kickass job on the Scout.

Tell your friend, if they haven't already checked it out, to go to http://www.binderbulletin.org that is THE site for IH owners.

I think there is a guy, Jim Maulis who can do a lot of good body work for these old rigs too. He is in Sedailia and owns a business claled Scout Pro. I think it is he and his sons that run it.

I will try to get some more details and get them over to you. Otherwise, have your friend check that site and post up, he'll get some good responses. Most will say learn to weld and do it yourself. :)

Thanks Jay. I would've probably changed my sig by now, but I'm too lazy. Plus, it is refreshing since I go through phases of posting, and then you can laugh at it once every six months or so...

I'll refer my friend to that shop.  He'll appreciate it!

So obviously this project has taken a bit longer than anticipated, but due to a brutal winter where it was located and some time constraints of the guy doing the work it has been while. However, I am okay with that because of the quality. I should have it back in about 2-3 weeks. The show is in about 4 weeks, so I wont be able to get it painted in time but I still plan on taking it.

I need to get it back before I can decide what color to paint it. I will probably leave the top white. I have considered painting it the Mocha Brown that VW uses on the Passat and then having the top painted more of a cream color.

We'll see. Trying to keep the costs down, so it will probably be whatever color choices I can get done for the cheapest price. :)

The parts that are still green I need to sand and prime/prep myself, so I still have work to do before getting it to paint.

Thanks, and I forgot to add, there is a bedliner getting sprayed in the tub before I pick it up too, so that will be really nice and durable.
